"In 1678, a Liverpool wine merchant sent two new representatives to Viana do Castelo, north of Oporto, to learn the wine trade. While on a vacation in the Douro, the two gentlemen visited the Abbot of Lamego, who treated them to a "very agreeable, sweetish and extremely smooth" wine, which had been fortified with a distilled spirit. The two Englishmen were so pleased with the product that they purchased the abbot's entire lot and shipped it home.[30]
Port became very popular in England after the Methuen Treaty of 1703, when merchants were permitted to import it at a low duty, while war with France deprived English wine drinkers of French wine. If we weren't able to chase them away we had to clean up the empty bottles, so I can say with some confidence that Boone's Farm and Seagram's gin (aka "bumpyface" because of the texture of the glass) far outnumbered any kind of beer. I'm not sure we really saw beer at all. I remember when we were getting 40oz bottles of King Cobra for 2.50, a bottle of Boone's Farm cost the same price and had nearly double the ABV. sometimes theyre the same price but even if it's a dollar more for a sixer of keystone ice(or natty ice, icehouse etc) the ABV is way higher
other than that a box of wine from costco is the cheapest thing id actually drink and somewhat enjoy |

It didn't taste very good but ultimately it went down pretty easy. I got pretty hammered on that stuff more than once. |
