Who else could we rely on for stuff like this? May seem like an obscure thing but those islands are actually important for force projection and the defense of our allies in the region as well as a stopping over point for naval resupply. Might also be some Air Force or CIA activity there but idr. It's a good thing to have to keep an eye on the Pakistan/India border and generally just a smart move for leverage with India, who is an unsteady ally when China isn't putting pressure on them
I think the UK was going to try negotiate a deal with Mauritius for DG on our behalf but it would certainly be worse than the years promised and subject us to more UN-ready pressure and more dead diplomatic weight from another TTT
Also don't think it's in that article but iirc back when it originally came up as a proposition the UK's cucky bullshit excuse for going through with it was some nonsense about illegal migrant (Tamil variety) protections and jurisdiction over that
