CC has a very aesthetic, exciting style of play and she had an historic rookie season. She scored most points in a season by a rookie and ended the season particularly strongly putting up big scoring numbers. She also broke the single season assist record in her rookie season.
She basically had an MVP caliber season in her rookie year.

I previously argued that at least a part of her popularity is race based. I'm not sure that's really it tbh. I think last 2 NCAA seasons were an important moment in women's bball. We had a legit rivalry between 2 historically great players that captured the public's interest.
That springboarded CC's popularity and she loved up to expectations in the wnba.
Big ladies are never going to be as famous as guards. It's a different game and the women don't have the same explosive athleticism as the men. No one is going to be amped up to watch Aja Wilson hit layups over smaller women. She's the best and most effective player, but pro sports is entertainment.
Boxing is the same. People are more drawn to sensational fighters over technically sound fighters even if they lose from time to time.
