CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A Cleveland man is accused of fatally shooting a 21-year-old man inside the lobby of his apartment complex, carjacking four people and shooting a 65-year-old woman, all in about an hour, according to police.
William Jones, 27, is charged with aggravated murder. He is being held in the Cleveland City Jail on $5 million bond after his first court appearance on Monday.
Jones on Saturday committed a series of carjackings after the fatal shooting of Jared Plesec, 21, of Cleveland.
Jones shot Plesec in the head at point-blank range about 9 a.m. Saturday in the lobby of the Euclid Beach Villa apartment complex on East 156th Street near Lakeshore Boulevard, according to Assistant Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Brian Murphy.
Plesec worked for the Salvation Army as a youth worker at the Salvation Army Temple Corps Community Center in Collinwood, the Salvation Army said in a statement.
He was on his way to collect money for the charity and was wearing his full Salvation Army uniform when he was killed, Murphy said. He died with a Bible in his hands, the Salvation army said.
Police have not released a motive for the shooting.
Jones ran from the building and unsuccessfully tried to steal a man's car at an intersection outside a nearby Citgo gas station, police said. Jones pointed the gun at the 30-year-old Cleveland Heights man, then walked around the car and pointed the gun at his 31-year-old passenger, according to police reports.
The driver said he couldn't understand what Jones was saying and sped off in fear of his life, police reports say. Jones fired three gunshots at the car as he drove away, Murphy said.
Jones then ran up to a 68-year-old woman's Honda Fit parked at a gas pump, police reports say. Jones pointed his gun at her and yelled "Get out of the car," police reports say.
The woman told police she was scared and unlocked her car door. Jones grabbed the woman by her coat, pulled her out of the car and pushed her to the ground, according to police reports.
Jones sped off and drove to East 72nd Street and North Marginal Road where he stole another man's car, police said.
He drove that car to the Emerald Necklace Marina near Detroit Avenue in Lakewood, where he shot a woman in the leg during a third carjacking, according to police. Jones sped away in the woman's 2015 Hyundai Sonata and ditched it in the middle of Sloane Avenue near Edanola Avenue, Lakewood police said.
Jones found a 2017 Dodge Ram pickup truck with the engine running and drove away in it, police said.
Lakewood police spotted the truck on Clifton Boulevard near Nicholson Avenue, police said. Jones ditched the truck in front of the Marine Towers building on Edgewater Drive, police said.
Jones then stole a 65-year-old woman's car at the apartment building. He pulled the woman out of her car, drove her 2011 Dodge Caliber through a closed garage door and into the parking lot, police said.
Lakewood police boxed him in at the parking lot and took him into custody, according to police.
Jones was released from prison Oct. 30, 2016 after serving one year and nine months for an armed carjacking. He is on post-prison release supervision until 2019, according to Ohio prison records.
Jones on Jan. 19, 2015 carjacked a man at gunpoint in the parking lot of a Walgreen's pharmacy in the 6400 block of Broadway Avenue. He stole the man's car, phone and $400, according to court records.
Jones also was twice convicted of carrying concealed weapons.
