But the only reason to do it is if you can't fill up your solo401k with pretax$. I.e. once I stop working this pretax401k will be converted to roth at 20% and now its 37%. Since I max my w2 employee 401k, my solo401k must come entirely from employer contribution hence 1099 income must be 350k+100k deductions =450k. I'm unlikely to do that on top of my regular day job. But the free version doesn't allow me to do "after-tax employee contribution"->roth conversion. If I produced about 450k in 1099 I could just max it out, but I'm not going to produce that much next year. So a lot of people in my situation pay $500setup +$100-200/year to set up customized plan, i.e. if i do 30k pretax, could put another 40k into roth. But I don't want to have to deal with that. I may do a few weekends here a s there and get another 100k. But I don't really have a reliable weekend shifts that are worth it (i.e. pay a lot, don't ask me to do too many shifts, and not too much work). It was easier to make extra income on the side when I worked nights 7on/14off.
