I think one of the big recurring themes in the postmodern analyses of the Garfield comics endemic in pop culture of a certain era is that Garfield is less of a real character in the classical sense and more of a force or "geist" that exists wherever Jon does and possibly even in the absence of Jon which has implications for the relationship between the two characters, and this is echoed in the comic's longevity and static nature.
