the standard 1st time tourist itinerary is delhi, agra, and rajastan (jaipur and hopefully udaipur). they're all near each other.
bombay and/or varanasi would also be great to get to if you can squeeze that all in.
you can get a private driver there. it's cheap as fuck.

we were extremely careful and didnt get sick at all. more careful than i've been anywhere
only eat cooked veggies/legumes, and nothing else. anything cooked/fried is safer because it's going to kill off stuff.
no meat
no raw vegetables or salads
nothing that could have been washed with water and isn't completely dry - make sure your utensils are dry.
no non-cooked dairy drinks
important point: keep these rules even at fancy restaurants. know tons of people who got sick letting their guard down at restaurants at 5* hotels. the same rajeeshs are in the kitchen with shit on their hands.
