It basically started out as a family.

The family later kicked off a dynasty, but the dynasty governed through religious authority as much as anything else. Shia Islam allows this but Sunni Islam does not.

This dynasty spawned some branches in Lebanon, and they became a presence in local politics there, but they weren't anything special. There were all these other types of muslims there and plenty of Christians. No one thought about making big moves.

1982 comes and Israel invades Lebanon, and suddenly the offspring of this dynasty are filling a power vacuum no Lebanese person invited.

It's 42 years later and the thing is still going, but no one remembers the dynasty do they? It's all about resisting Israel now. Will picking off the leadership actually affect the political trajectory of the org at this point?

He was already det by 1982. He was det before the Iranian revolution even happened:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musa_al-Sadr

"He belongs to the Sadr family from Jabal Amel in Lebanon, a branch of the Musawi family which traces its roots to Musa Ibn Jaafar, the seventh Shia Imam, and ultimately to the Islamic prophet Muhammad through his daughter Fatima. Therefore, Musa al-Sadr is often styled with the honorific title Sayyid."
