Why is rushing considered a less legitimate way to win than passing?

A win is a win, the point of the critique is that a team that can't pass has a lot less margin for error on the defensive side. Running by its nature doesn't stop the clock as much, which means running teams rarely score points quickly. So if they fall behind substantially (say 2-3 touchdowns) they have two choices and both of them are bad-- they can either run and chew up too much clock, probably not having enough time to catch up or they can switch to the pass which they're bad at, which probably will not work.
This is much less true of teams that are good at passing but bad at rushing-- if they want to switch to chewing up clock, it doesn't take any skill to run, run, run, punt and even one first down will get a new set of downs to chew up yet more clock.
Bringing this back to Michigan, they're frauds because if they fall behind they have no way to catch up.

This doesn't exist or at least not in the same way. Even a team that's horrible at rushing can kill the clock if they need to-- their RB can at least run it three times for a yard or two or they can do simple high percentage passes to the flat and stay in bounds, etc. A pass orientated team can switch to killing the clock if they need to. A team that can only rush can't switch to a high speed offense if they need to. A team that can't pass will win games, but they cannot win a championship in the modern era.

the spread at kickoff was USC by 4.5 points. most observers thought there were two real possibilities:
- usc has a lot of success passing and wins by a lot
- in a close, hard-fought game, usc wins by a little
turns out it was a close game but michigan won by a little

to answer your question, people doubt michigan because they don't seem to be able to pass AT ALL. the pass protection is weak, the receivers aren't getting open, and the current qb has a very limited ability to read a defense.
last year michigan could pass (and do it really well) but chose to be conservative and chew clock on offense by running a lot. no one doubted that team.

Football is a complex game that relies a lot on trickery and misdirection.
If you look at the total amount of all the things a football offense can do, passing is probably 70% and running is at most 30%. And the optimal defense against those 30% looks pretty similar.
So if you're only running the ball, yeah you can beat a team if you have vastly better talent/execution - but it's like a pitcher who only has a great fastball.
As a major leaguer he can probably strike out most minor leaguers. But it's not going to be great when the other team has major leage hitters, and your major league hitter is up against a pitcher with that same great fastball, plus a curve, plus a change up, plus a slider.
There's a chance you can beat them with just a fast ball - but any hitter is going to tell you that fast ball is a lot easier to hit when you know its the only pitch coming.

Is this the same OP who poasts the semi-retarded aaron judge-trolling threads under the premise of 'just asking questions' that then reverts to uncompromising promotion of judge (here, michigan)?
Because I really kind of enjoy this shtick.

It's not just baseball that's been revolutionized by analytics. We're still in the early days of football, but the surviving coaches for the most part think analytically and statistically, not about being "tough" or having virtue or whatever the fuck. Those that didn't adapt started losing and got fired.
