It happened during the lunch rush. The sourdough toppled first, then the brioche, until the whole rack lay in ruins. Customers gasped, a child cried. I just stood there, staring at the wreckage.
One of my employees asked if I was okay. I nodded and whispered, “Yes, friend. It’s just bread.” But we both knew it wasn’t. It was everything.
Corporate will send another email. “Increase efficiency. Reduce waste.” But they won’t ask why the bread fell. They never do.
