The established majors were the Rose, Sugar, Orange, Cotton, and Fiesta bowls. Playing on January 1 did not automatically make a bowl major; several secondary bowls also received New Year's Day slots. The Peach Bowl grew considerably after Atlanta's Chamber of Commerce took control in 1986, but it did not receive formal top-tier status until it joined the College Football Playoff's New Year's Six in 2014.
