Right in that doughnut of maximal shittiness. NYC is good if you're poor and the city hands you everything and you couldn't get all of that elsewhere (on the UWS I noticed one of the public housing areas had both parking and a pool, both of which are rare for market apartments except for very high end buildings) or rich as fuck. $100k is just that salary where you'll get absolutely nothing but not wealthy enough that you can actually appreciate the luxury stuff either. Yet, at $100k you could live a pretty great life in a place like Cleveland or the Atlanta area or whatever.

But to answer your q - if you're smart you find a rent stabilized apartments or you live in Hoboken/Jersey City. If you're dumb you live in some apartment you can't actually afford but get roommates and deal with that drama. You feel pretty poor and are budgeting everything.

Honestly probably like $1.8-$2m per year. Taxes are high and housing is expensive so making even 7 figures won’t get you to first base anymore, but at $2m you start to have options.

Define your standard of "good" and describe who would be in the household. Trying to raise a family in NYC requires many times more than being a 20-something single guy on their first job.

Single dude in the city: ideally $250k+. That's enough to get that luxury apartment (probably an alcove studio but w/e), eat at some decent restaurants, fuck whores, whatever it is that you want to do. It isn't enough to do the Hamptons and elite restaurant thing. You need $400k+ for that.

Couple raising kids? Legit 7 figures or a lot of net worth/family money to leverage. In MFH you'll need like a 3+ bedroom and that is absurdly expensive. You're paying $10k+ just in rent. Taxes are absurd in NYC. Private school is $50k/year/kid. You're going to need a car and garage. Basically anything normal people do will be more expensive and harder in NYC. There is a reason that pretty much no one with real money attempts to raise kids in NYC. They leave and head to one of the areas around NYC or leave the area entirely.

I've seen it and knew quite a few people with kids in Manhattan. IRL examples that come to mind:

1. People that live in some rent controlled/stabilized/HDFC apartment.

2. People that work for the NYC government have to live in NYC. The sad thing is that the wife was the government worker and she got pancreatic cancer and died.

3. Absurdly wealthy people (Biglaw partners) that don't want to leave and can afford it.

All of them are effectively corner cases.

Depends because that describes a lot of various people. Maybe it is some guy that works for the city and lives in Astoria or a cheap part of Brooklyn or w/e. Or maybe it is someone working for big 4 accounting and working their way up. Or maybe it is someone with a lot of family money that is making $100k doing some bs job but they used family money to by an HDFC apartment (it is all total bs because only people with family money could buy the apartment and qualify for the income limits - but $100k is generally within the limit). So you could get something like this in MFH:

https://streeteasy.com/building/46-rivington-street-new_york/1c

https://streeteasy.com/building/323-west-43-street-new_york/5r

https://streeteasy.com/building/155-west-106-street-new_york/1a

https://streeteasy.com/building/1864-adam-c-powell-blvd-new_york/64

https://streeteasy.com/building/517-west-48-street-new_york/5f

This is a great example of the type of person NYC is actually made for. I knew people like this. They were journalists or whatever and didn't make real money but came from wealthy families so they bought one of these apartments and their families covered private schools for the kids.

Let me caveat that: it depends on who you are and what you're looking for.

The doormen in my building make like 80-90K per year, much of it in tax-free tips. One of them is a charismatic Puerto Rican bodybuilder who fucks tons of hot chicks. They're not UES socialites but some are upwardly mobile nurse practitioners, real estate agents, etc.

What you don't understand (or remember) is that NYC has tons of gays, foreigners, and other undesirables for hot white women under 35. And women generally only want to date men of a similar social class. There are just way more single women than men, and the sex and the city culture has indoctrinated NYC women to be depraved whores to attract men. There's really nothing like it in the US.

Moral of the story is you are OK dating here even under 200k if you are a chad or even just charismatic/ambitious. But if you want to lock down a good wife from a wealthy family you will not even be a blip on the radar at 200K.

saying "women under 35" is like saying "men who make over 100k"
