People think ai kills software development because "ai can just code something". But that isn't even the biggest reason. Biggest reason is that AI can do most of the shit you would want software to do. Noone wants budgeting software anymore for instance when they can just copy and paste that shit into gpt and get an output in whatever format they want.

Very good poast. Software at its essence just takes information from one place, manipulates it, and moves it somewhere else. AI is this, but generalized instead of specialized and it can be trained.

This is basically why SaaS companies started getting nuked in the market.

Except most data is not easy for AI to access. For many reasons. It’s held by these app companies in a very fragmented way. That will probably change. But for now it’s why AI hasn’t taken over and things are going slower than anticipated. And anyone that has done migrations or the likes knows this is not necessarily an easy problem.

I agree fully. People greatly overestimate the speed at which AI will transform the broader software industry. IMO the "killer apps" of AI are vertical-specific and built to access data pools. They are being built out now. I think will look quite different in 5 years.

"Noone wants budgeting software anymore for instance when they can just copy and paste that shit into gpt and get an output in whatever format they want."

BS. I actually pay for Monarch because it is a much better product than just feeding shit into Claude or Gemini (GPT is SPS, btw). It does it on its own and provides reports in a way that is useful for me. Just the connectors into various institutions is something that AI can't easily reproduce.

And yes, I'm an advanced AI user that has created AI agents to deliver actual work product at work. However, I've also been involved in a number of software projects where AI can't really just "handle it." It can still help make coding faster.

"Just the connectors into various institutions is something that AI can't easily reproduce."

You are missing the point that this is literally the entire moat now--a secure internet connection between 2 servers.

If Chase and Wells Fargo gave OpenAI an MCP connector, Quickbooks would probably go out of business within 12-24 months.

That is the likely result because they'll be in existential crisis. Not because any users actually want a glorified wrapper on an OpenAI model from last year with an artificial moat.

GPT-5.6 Sol is literally the best frontier model. Claude and Gemini are Jokes by comparison. You're just not using it correctly.

Install the codex CLI and you will see massive differences. The major difference being off-loading a lot of the compute to your home computer rather than OpenAI's servers. For actual LLM reasoning, this is useless, but LLM reasoning can write code that runs locally on your computer. Instead of burning compute tokens on something you can run locally, you can have codex write whatever you need to achieve whatever you need to do.

Sol 5.6 wrecked it on an internal tech safety audit when that is literally Fable's main expertise

So CR! I finally gave in and got Perplexity Pro that has all these awesome agentic capabilities. I told it I needed to book a hotel in OC for September 21-24. Amazing experience! It offered me a variety of hotels, described their features, asked how much I wanted to pay, and what amenities I was most interested in. I was able to seamlessly answer all its questions, and then it recommended a hotel that I could book through Hotels.com! Navigated my browser (Firefox with VPN enabled) to the website, logged into my account, selected the dates and chose the hotel, input my work CC info, and BAM! Work-trip secured!

THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING.
