h at the end of the day, its warm steam rising in wispy tendrils as they tell each other about their comings and goings, castaway companions reunited. The man is tired, his briefcase set in the corner of the bathroom from another long day in the city. In due time, after ducks battling stormy seas and a sinking submarine, the topic turns, as it often does, to matters of space and time, the infinite. The man takes out a piece of paper from his pocket. "Scholarship, let's say one end of this paper is Earth," he points, a dot of wetness on the page, "and the other a planet in our nearest star system, Alpha Centauri"--another dot. Scholarship nods--how many times has he been regaled with tales of that nearest system, so close yet so far within the limitations of mankind's current knowledge. "Let's suppose we want to get from point A to point B as quickly as possible. How do we do it?" Scholarship's eyes light up and he moves his hand rapidly across the paper. "We go fast!" The man smiles and laughs. "Yes. We could go fast. But that might still take many years." Scholarship's eyes are fixed on the man's as he speaks. "Here's an idea. What if, instead, we were to fold the paper so that point A and point B touched." As he describes it, the man gently brings the two ends of the paper together. "What then?" A pause. Scholarship looks at the folded paper, considering it. "Then you'd be there right away." The man tousles scholarship's hair and whispers "that's right." A second time, clearing his throat. "That's right!" "Well, how can we do that, daddy?" "We can't. Not yet. We'd need someone very bright, and very hardworking, to figure it out. To build it." Scholarship smiles. "I could do it." Tears well in the man's eyes. He averts his glance so scholarship can't see, casting his eyes upward through the open window in the cold autumn air toward the canopy of stars shining bright in the heavens. "I bet you could."
