1) Cold Turkey

2) AA

3) Rehab either followed by AA or not

Ways that are not good:

1) Moderation

2) Naltrexone

3) Antabuse

4) Taking breaks, such as Dry January

The singular difference between real alcoholics and heavy drinkers is that alcoholics can, over any length of time, drink zero or drink more. A heavy drinker can, over time, drink zero, drink less, drink the same, or drink more.

Among people who have serious problems I’ve seen them successfully recover only by the first three methods. Just quit; quit with help from AA; go to rehab and choose to do AA or not do AA (in other words the only options are cold turkey or AA and rehab just helps you get started on that.). What are some other methods you’ve seen where the person actually stays sober for five years or more?

I’ve never seen long term sobriety achieved through drugs alone.

Yes because this is what they teach in AA and you are clearly an AA cultist. There is no categorical difference between an alcoholic and a heavy drinker. that's a made up distinction.

Are you saying there’s no difference between a heavy drinker who can stop and a heavy drinker who can’t stop? Because alcoholics can’t stop - that’s the defining characteristic.

i don't know what "can't stop" means. Do you mean they continue to drink? So the difference between an alcoholic and a heavy drinker is the former continues to drink and the latter doesn't? If that's true, then the latter is not a heavy drinker, since they don't continue. Your distinction is a fraud.

No, the difference is the compulsion. It happens all the time that a heavy drinker gets a DWI and stops drinking until they’re off probation. The alcoholic gets a DWI and continues to drink, even when they don’t want to. There are lots of alcoholics with five or more DWIs - they cannot stop themselves.

The heavy drinker can start up again and then quit again.

Meditation and shrooms stopped my moderate drinking completely. This wasn’t really the objective but happened accidentally. Improved emotional regulation and the equanimity that both tend to cultivate will diminish most desires. And yes, that’s preferable to normal existence.

From the big book of AA: Here are some of the methods we have tried: Drinking beer only, limiting the number of drinks, never drinking alone, never drinking in the morning, drinking only at home, NEVER HAVING IT IN THE HOUSE, never drinking during business hours, drinking only at parties, switching from scotch to brandy, drinking only natural wines, agreeing to resign if ever drunk on the job, taking a trip, not taking a trip, swearing off forever (with and without a solemn oath), taking more physical exercise, reading inspirational books, going to health farms and sanitariums, accepting voluntary commitment to asylums - we could increase the list ad infinitum. -p. 34

The 12 steps are basically ego deflation, confession, restitution and service work. Plus faith in a power greater than yourself.

“Alcoholism” and other addictions become problems because they take over your life. The best way to get over an addiction is to get back to a disciplined way of life where you’re focused on setting and attaining goals and other things in your life than the addiction. The worst way is to just obsess about the it and go down some hate spiral. Once you have a balanced life you don’t even want it anymore and wonder how the addiction even happened.
