Tom, our store’s resident rideshare driver, is a legend in exploiting Seattle’s TNC Deactivation Rights Ordinance.
He’s had at least a dozen complaints about blasting polka music at full volume, yet he’s still out there, accordion blaring, unscathed.
Today, he picked me up after my manager shift. Before I even buckled in, the Chicken Dance was assaulting my eardrums. I asked if he ever considered, you know, lowering the volume.
He grinned and said, “Passengers can hate it all they want, friend. They can’t deactivate me without a FAIR HEARING. And I plan to defend my right to party.”
Halfway through the ride, a BBW in the backseat begged him to change the station. Tom didn’t flinch. He turned the volume up and said, “Polka’s protected under Seattle law, friends!”
HR later confirmed that Tom’s fully aware of every loophole in the ordinance. His hearing is months away, and in the meantime, the complaints keep piling up: “Driver hostile,” “Refused to turn off polka,” “Laughed while I cried in the backseat.”
Got home, ears ringing, opened a bottle of wine, and whispered, “Yes, friend. This is fine.”
