it's a pricing strategy to drive people toward season passes or 4 packs of tickets. the article mentions increases in insurance but all ski resorts have higher costs and in the face of additional risk and costs, they're trying to lock in more revenue in advance of the season.
the strategy for people trying to get into the sport is to start on the cheapest, smallest hills. build some basic skills for a season, then if you want to ski more, buy a season pass and go a lot. you can bring down the cost per day of a lift ticket to a reasonable $40-50. it will never be a cheap sport but doesn't have to be exorbitant.
