"Amy's Baking Company" is the 16th episode of the sixth season of Kitchen Nightmares, and the 82nd episode of the series.[1] The episode first aired on May 10, 2013, and centered on Gordon Ramsay attempting to help Amy and Samy Bouzaglo, owners of Amy's Baking Company in Scottsdale, Arizona.[2]

The episode marked the only time in the history of both the British and the American versions of Kitchen Nightmares that Ramsay was unable to complete the restaurant's transformation due to conflict with the owners.[3] The owners' extreme and inappropriate behaviors received negative attention on social media, and the manner in which they responded further fueled the controversy, prompting Forbes to refer to this as an example of how a business should not react to comments posted on social media.[4]

A follow-up episode, "Return to Amy's Baking Company", aired as the season-seven premiere on April 11, 2014.[5]

Amanda "Amy" (née Bossingham)[6] and Salomon "Samy" Bouzaglo, the husband-and-wife owners, explain that Samy invested over a million dollars to build the restaurant in 2007 to "fulfill Amy's dreams".[7]About two years prior to the episode's filming, several local food bloggers remarked negatively about the restaurant's food and the owners' behavior. Amy claims the reviews are "lies" and states that they cost the restaurant a "tremendous amount of business".[8]

The camera crew arrives the night before Ramsay's arrival and witnesses an argument between Samy and a customer (while inside the restaurant) while Amy threatens to call the police. A cameraman intercedes to prevent any violence. He accompanies the customers outside as Amy berates the remaining customers.

Upon his arrival, Ramsay is initially impressed with the kitchen's good hygiene and organization, and by Amy's desserts, but becomes more wary when Amy admits that she closes the restaurant if either of the owners are not there. After the initial discussion, Ramsay samples lunch dishes and responds rather negatively to several of them, one of which he discovers is a mass-produced frozen product despite being advertised on the menu as freshly made. Samy reveals to Ramsay that Amy does not deal well with criticism. Ramsey witnesses unethical and unkind treatment of waitstaff by the owners, who try several times to justify it.[9]

During the dinner service, customers complain about long waiting periods and several send back dishes they dislike. Amy intentionally makes dishes unpalatable for customers she disapproves of and Samy tells dissatisfied customers not to come back.[10] Amy responds defensively to Ramsey's criticism and behaves unprofessionally toward the waitstaff, firing an employee for asking once for confirmation about an order.[9] Ramsay witnesses further questionable treatment of waitstaff, such as the owners taking their tips.[4]

While interviewing former employees, Ramsay discovers that at least fifty people were fired during an eighteen-month period. When Ramsay offers constructive criticism of Amy's and Samy's management style, Amy becomes extremely defensive and Samy reveals that that the number of fired employees is closer to 100. Finally, Ramsay learns that Amy had lied to him about making the desserts herself. Ramsay concludes they are not open to making any changes and gives up. In a concluding monologue, he states that this is the first time he has met restaurant owners that he could not help; the restaurant has gone through a hundred staff members and Amy and Samy have infuriated the local community. They seem incapable of accepting criticism and he believes that they would not have adhered to any changes he would have implemented to improve the restaurant.[3]

Looking back at Amy's Baking Company

Amy's Baking Company appeared on "Kitchen Nightmares" Season 6 and became the first restaurant Gordon Ramsay quit on.

It’s been nearly a decade since Amy’s Baking Company shut down in Scottsdale.

But who could forget the owners, Amy and Salomon "Samy" Bouzaglo? They made headlines after appearing on an episode of "Kitchen Nightmares" that aired in May 2013 and continued to do so until they closed their restaurant in September 2015.

You may recall Samy allegedly waving a knife at customers and accusing Gordon Ramsay of sexual harassment, or Amy saying, "I speak feline MEOW!" and Samy yelling at a customer, "Here's your pizza, go (expletive) yourself!"

Since then, they have avoided being in the public eye, although Amy continues to bake.

While she wasn't responsive to media requests, at least The Arizona Republic's, we did a little digging and came up with answers to some of the questions you’re probably wondering.

Where are Amy and Samy now?

According to Maricopa County records, Amy filed for divorce in April 2022. Samy's Facebook page states his status as single and living in Netanya, Israel. On August 29, 2021, Samy posted a photoshopped slide of Amy on Vogue with a rant that read: "It's the same girl Amy frome Amy'baking comp she want to be a fake model like her pastries."

Amy continues to post baked goods on her Instagram. She did not respond to The Republic's attempts to reach her about where she is currently living.

Is Amy's Baking Company still in business?

Yes and no. The restaurant is closed, however, Amy has an account by the same name on Instagram, on which she calls herself "Baking Wizard" and "Content Creator." She posts photos and videos of her new glittery desserts for her over 30,000 followers. Her most recent post was dated August 3, 2024. A link to her Amazon shop lists products she uses in her baking along with other favorite items.

Comments on her posts range from startlingly vile to extremely supportive.

Why did Amy's Baking Company close?

According to The Republic, the couple sold the property due to issues with the building's previous landlord. Amy said that the landlord allowed construction in parts of the shopping center and it "led to a sewer-like odor seeping into their restaurant." The shopping center was purchased by East Village at Shea LLC, a company formed by Bob Parsons' YAM Properties.

When did Amy's Baking Company close?

Amy's Baking Company closed in September 2015.

What season is Amy's Baking Company on 'Kitchen Nightmares'?

Amy's Baking Company appeared on Season 5, Episode 16 and Season 6, Episode 1 of "Kitchen Nightmares."

What happened to Amy's Baking Company?

After Amy's Baking Company closed, B&R Wine-Food occupied the space for a year but closed in December 2016. In March 2021, artist Rachel Ober opened Rachel's Young at Art Studio, which according to her website, is a safe space where children can grow socially and emotionally through art.

What are the accusations against Amy's Baking Company?

According to the show, the owners yelled expletives at and pushed customers, took the tips left for the servers and refused to take criticism from Ramsay. The result? They became the first owners Ramsay quit on, explaining, he couldn't help them because they were "incapable of listening." Samy was also accused of waving a knife at a customer, however, later he claimed it was a pen.

Why was Samy deported?

According to USA Today and 12 News, Samy's failure to disclose that he had served time for extortion and drug charges overseas led to a case against him by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. He was deported in 2018 and the couple moved to Netaniya, Israel. He had also been banned from France and Germany due to his history.
