get your feet wet by buying a foreclosed property on the cheap that needs a good amount of work. you'll learn a lot by demoing and remodeling a SFH.

The most important thing is to have a network of good subcontractors to do the work

You can be a total retard with good subs and still succeed

Yeah. Getting some work done right now and tbh the network of good subs seems not difficult to build with time. Most are illegal mercenaries who will work for whoever gives them the most money. The hardest part seems to be getting clients and the marketing side of it

That part is relatively easy. It's 80% about the subs, 10% if you're 115+ IQ and have the basic cognitive capabilities to run a business, 10% people skills and networking

If you're not extroverted, you're not going to enjoy it much, because most of the job is people management and gladhanding. So maybe gunnerattt would enjoy it after all since he's such a turbo extrovert

Yeah the people management part sounds like never ending hell. Wouldn’t enjoy that. But maybe residential remodeling is not where I ought to plant my flag.

At least with my current contractor the guy has zero eye or talent for design and elite workmanship and I’ve had to be far too involved. Seems like being somewhat savvy and detail-oriented would go a long way.

It seems like being savvy and detail oriented would pay dividends, but in practice they actually don't. What pays is being a bullshitter who can network well and establish relationships with subs

You can say this applies to every job, but there are other professions in which being savvy and detail oriented pay far greater dividends. For example, if you think you'd enjoy being a GC, and you're actually pretty smart, but not an extrovert networking type, you should just be an architect. Doesn't really apply to guys already our age but for a younger person thinking about their career it would

but there is something spiritually satisfying about the physical manifestation of my labor being something i step back and admire.

that but also overall exhaustion and that sort of frustration from doing an unpleasant task. i changed some nasty plumbing the other day, which was satisfying, but waking up and doing it every fucking day would suck.

a good analogy is hiking. i love hiking and backpacking. but i have no desire to do something like thru-hike the AT. it's energizing and satisfying to do it for a week or more, but doing it for months and the feeling you *must* do it would suck. likewise, putting in a new sewage line is a spirtually and physically satisfying. but it would suck it have to do it everyday, and *have* to do it to earn a living.

for most biglawyers there is a certain iq threshold you need to be over. but after that many aren't "using their brains", they're doing the same fairly rote thing over and over that the can do on autopilot (and many do very well blackout drunk).

meanwhile, doing construction requires constantly using your brain. yeah, it's something with a fairly low iq threshold, but measuring, figuring out how stuff fits together, etc. is a cognitively demanding tasks.

while i don't think most plumbers have the iq to do what i do, i bet plumbers and me use more of their mental energy doing plumbing than i do practicing lol.

The same thing applies to hanging drywall or installing plumbing. Mostly rote repetition after you learn the basics

Being a real lawyer is difficult and requires a lot of brainpower. I am friends with lawyers and I know what you guys do. I dunno if everyone here is in true shitlaw or whatever but they are smart and their jobs are challenging and the difference between a talented lawyer and an untalented one is truly massive. The difference between a mediocre plumber and a talented one is very little

my point is that there is a difference between the iq threshold required to learn something and the active cognition it takes to actually do it.

no matter how smart you are, your brain is very active when you're doing many construction tasks. meanwhile, while few of them could ever understand how 7.6 relates to 9.2, i could do that in my sleep, but i couldn't build a HS carpentry birdhouse without actively thinking.
