I commute with a Boeing engineer. He's working on Artemis now. I asked him about SpaceX and the talent level. He noted avg age for their engineers is in their 40's but he read for SpaceX it's in the 20s. The offer package Boeing makes to new engineers is more generous, particularly when you factor in SpaceX expecting you to live at the facility. Boeing gets utterly crushed in recruitment. They all want to work for Elon.
His take on Blue Origin was a bit different. They get good talent but company culture is extremely risk adverse. He mentioned how they landed their first reusable on a sea platform perfectly on the first attempt. It was called a huge success but he said the lead time and prep to pull that off is far too conservative. They're terrified and crippled by the thought of failure so they crawl along like a snail. |
