i used to live in belmont heights, had the crystal springs xc course in my neighborhood and water dog park. back yard was terraced, view of the bay, and could access the hiking trail from it. by bay area standards, about as nice as you could ask for.

i'm now a neighbor with ex-vpotus

I hear you, man. I love the weather, food, hills/biking, and general health consciousness. I don’t like much of the rest, including how overpriced nearly everything is because some other dumb asshole will pay it.

We’re debating private school now and I can’t believe it. God willing my wife comes around and we can continue sending kids to the public schools I can literally see from our front yard. We live in a very a good district but our middle school is a little diverse (the bad kind).

We're about an hour to the city core and 40 minutes to the shopping center burbs. We are 7 miles out from the center of a town of 17000. It's 9 miles to the grocery store. The county is pretty rural. A little over 60000 people in 530 sq miles.

no rules here like the ones you mentioned you have in your town though. close neighbors and i all have larger lots and houses well off the road but just around the corner its different and elsewhere in my town the new construction selling for over a million have almost no yard or space between houses

Oh yea, the new construction lots are completely LJL territory in some neighboring towns. Barely larger than a proverbial tramp stamp.

Just a block away (already in neighboring town), they tore down a SFH and built a duplex on the original half acre lot, now selling them for 1.5m a piece.

depends on what you're counting - current home value to official permitted house space? in that case mine's about $1,300/sqft, but i have a remodeled garage office that i'm currently poasting from that would drop it to about an even $1k/ft.

purchase cost to permitted space around $1k/ft, purchase cost to total usable space under $800/ft.

also socal.

I have to say, it’s 180 to have a mansion albeit wasteful.

Is 5200 square feet really the largest so far? My parents' house (that I will probably inherit when they kick the bucket) is around 5600 square feet. It's nice enough, I suppose, but I'm surprised that nobody has a larger house on prestigious law bort. Some of my parent's neighbors have houses that are significantly larger and nicer.

If you want an old house, it’s basically impossible to find things like tall ceilings, giant rooms (like a ballroom — most of which were added later — or large living room and dining room for entertaining), decent closets, functionally sized kitchen, large bathrooms etc. absent buying a mansion with many more bedrooms than are reasonable. People had more children and extended family and had servants 100 years ago and floor plans reflect that. So while a modern design might have non-bedroom spaces that were the same size at call it 6-7k sq/ft, 5-6 bedrooms/baths to get that in a 100 year old house you have to buy something 10k sq/ft. with 10 plus bedrooms (including small ones for servants).

And that is not accounting tor the fact that old houses are often three stories of living space above ground and modern houses are rarely more than two (although finished basements are a thing).

If you study design and house plans it all makes sense.

what do you think will happen with floorplans in the coming decades with robots? take the open concept floorplan that is so popular today. do you think that once robots start appearing in the home that the kitchen will go back to more of a distinct and separate area? do you think the popular "back kitchen" starting to appear in homes will be populated by robots in the future as the main cooking area with robots being hid away from sight? do you think there will be dedicated spaces for robots to "rest" and recharge? i see future floorplans changing drastically in the next 50 years.

To me, that is an excellent question. The stupid thing is that my parents' ~5600 square foot house doesn't even have that many bedrooms. One time my sister was visiting with her two kids. I asked if I could come visit. My parents told me that they would have to put me in a hotel room because there was no room in the house. I'm like, "You have 5600 fucking square feet." I guess they felt like they needed a huge ass "great room" on both floors for the one time per year when they have guests over. I understand the appeal of a gigantic house if you have a large family and want to make it easy for your kids and grandkids to visit. But I don't really understand having a huge house just for the sake of having a huge house.
