It feels like no one cared about WWI or WWII in the 70s, like Spielberg made WWII cool again but that no one cared for a while, in the public consciousness it was just black & white videos of cannons firing for a long time

Lol Henry Kissinger was literally playing Risk IRL with the US military in 1970. Nixon talked a good based game but he was a thoroughly tricked goy in most respects.

Where eagles dare 1968

Tora tora tora 1970

The dirty dozen 1967

A lot of these are about sidequests/adventures set against the backdrop of WW2. River Kwai, Navarone, great escape, dirty dozen are all like this imo. They’re just these Films with no dramatic core or conflict to them where you’re supposed to be excited when cannons go off or when a tank drives by or when Gregory Peck says something dramatic

Band of Brothers has guys in foxholes getting shelled, close infantry fighting, Holocaust, then drinks at the eagles nest. The 1950s-60s Film sensibilities were such that they didn’t want to make Films about anything realistic, they just wanted to tell Boring Stories.

When you think about it, society was boring af before boomers ruined it. 1959 was really fucking close to 1859. Maybe WW2 was really just a bunch of cannons going off and the boomer version where Jews were genocided was made up for dramatic effect

Also a hugely successful, Emmy winning sitcom about American soldiers in a nazi POW camp. Although obvs you can use Hogan’s Heroes to support the argument that we were less uptight about genuflecting to the sanctity of the holocaust and the evil of the third reich at that point. Still it was clearly settled in the US public’s mind that nazis were bad guys forever.

I’ve never seen 1 second of hogans heroes, ever. But if they had nazis as hapless sitcom villains then that just wouldn’t fit tonally with their modern reputation imho

This is good.

If you were born in the mid 80s as I assume many posters were, your average American WWI vet was pretty much also in his 80s at the time. There were quite a few of them still banging around. I always thought it was cool that I had lifespan overlap with those dudes.
