I work with some folks who are really into work for the sake of work. You know the whole concept of “work ethic.”

But, it’s hard for me.

No. Will those help?

I’m serious, I need to learn how to just be one of those robots who revels in the pleasures of work for work’s sake. That is the expectation.

well her main novels (The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged) definitely have lots of pro-productivity ideas. i don't know if they'll help your specific situation, since i don't know your background, what you do or what your attitude towards your work is, but they might help and are worth reading in their own right

Working hard in the abstract will never motivate anyone sane. Man needs meaning to thrive!

You can raise a dog with food

You can keep a servant with money

But only purpose will motivate a man.

I need the money and have no other options, so yes, yes I do. I deserve it for being me. And that’s okay. I can accept it. I just need to learn how to smile and dance and tell a funny joke while I do the ol’ soft shoe in the corner like Mr Bojangles

You don't need the money: you've decided to subject yourself to this for this amount of money. You can quit. Even with no plan, you can quit and then figure something out. It's not worth it. If it's now or later, do it now. You only get one life.

we're ultimately hunter-gatherers who are meant to do 3-4 hours of intense yet stimulating work in a close-knit organic peer group early in the day and fuck off for the rest of it. we never biologically caught up to the world we made.

It's exceptionally hard when you're a lawyer. At least for me it is.

I like sales and did it before going to law school. The motivation to work is very directly connected to your income in a tangible way: make the sale, get paid. Make more sales, get paid more.

What incentive do I have to review some dense, boring as fuck legal document at 10pm and then discuss it with others? It's an atrocious way to live and I am completely unmotivated to do it.

The hardest, most tedious work just stays on your desk for a week, then 2 weeks. It just sits.

It’s miserable coming in everyday and seeing that albatross sitting there.

I know lawyers who come in, close their office door, and grind out work unflinchingly for hours. It blows my mind. Just hours on end alone in a room doing an incredibly boring, tedious, and somehow stressful job.
