Do people actually listen to obscure bands like Smashing Pumpkins and Oasis?

Or do people just mention them to seem edgy?

Send a heartbeat to

The void that cries through you

Relive the pictures that have come to pass

For now we stand alone

The world is lost and blown

And we are flesh and blood disintegrate

With no more to hate

Is it bright where you are

Now the people changed?

Does it make you happy, you're so strange?

And in your darkest hour

I hold secret's flame

We can watch the world devoured in its pain

Delivered from the blast

The last of a line of lasts

The pale princess of a palace cracked

And now the kingdom comes

Crashing down undone

And I am a master of a nothing place

Of recoil and grace

Is it bright where you are

Now the people changed?

Does it make you happy, you're so strange?

And in your darkest hour

When I hold secret's flame

We can watch the world devoured in its pain

Time has stopped before us

The sky cannot ignore us

No one can separate us

For we are all that is left

The echo bounces off me

The shadow lost beside me

There's no more need to pretend

'Cause now I can begin again

Is it bright where you are

Now the people changed?

Does it make you happy, you're so strange?

And in your darkest hour

I hold secret's flame

We can watch the world devoured in its pain

Strange

Strange

Strange

It's wild hearing zoomers talk or write about music

I read an interview with some zoomer musician (I forget who), and they spent a little bit of time talking about how they found a particular Sheryl Crow lyric to be like, poignant or something.

Bewildering.

there was an awful period in like early 1996 when both of these bands were at the peak of their underserved pseudo-popularity.

1996 was like the year when 'alt rock' faded away, and then those 'Creed' and 'Sugar Ray' type bands started coming in the following year.

SP and Oasis had good-to-very-good debut albums/singles but imploded into the purest sub-mediocrity almost immediately thereafter.

sort of mystifying when this happens to a band. see also: Interpol et al.

They both had 2.5 legendary albums that propelled them to being among the biggest rock stars in the world at the time and gave them evergreen music careers where they could make CSLG money working every couple of years and still being big in the media and culture for decades based on their 90s hits alone. But yeah just that small thing aside they did eventually fail to recapture (what 99% of musicians never had) the same songwriting peak they once had when they took over the world for decades.

SP's first album Hunting High and Low (for Asian Bussy) wasn't great aside from the iconic smash hit "Take On Me" with the classic music video of him emerging from an asian boy's Clifford book. Fairer to file him under one hit wonder imo.

People who heckin love obscure indie bands think that Nirvana, the Pumpkins, and Oasis are colossally mainstream sellouts that are as big as The Beatles and the Rolling Stones. It all depends on your perspective. If you like popular mainstream rock you think your favorite bands get no attention. If your favorite band is in Titus Andronicus you think that SP are bigger than Elvis.
