i was at texas is the reason's first show, in 1995. the lineup was nutty - it was in chatham, nj and the lineup was: texas is the reason, shift, doughnuts, snapcase, mouthpiece and ignite (first east coast show and first time i'd ever heard them).

this was about a week after i broke my nose in half so i had to stand at the back and observe. if you look at mouthpiece's last 7" cover, a couple of my friends are on the cover singing along onstage. there was a version of that picture whre you could see me standing off in the back.

there was a popular band called Floorpunch, and this show was the show where the members decided to start a band.

we almost drove off the road on the way home that night.

A lot of cool things came out of the 90s DC hardcore scene. A lot of great musical ideas, a lot of experimentation, a lot of cultural innovations.

Then talented musicians combined it with Pop Punk and sold millions of records. It's okay to admit some ppl are more talented than others and "it's a vibe" isn't enough to reach the pinnacle.

not so much the 90s, but the 80s DC hardcore scene was goated. i'd argue that we had the best first gen hc scene, but we're neck and neck with LA. you could argue LA wins too.

DC and LA from 1979 - 1984 shaped hardcore as we know it today.

coming up in the 90s DC HC scene was really cool though. we got so many great shows coming through. i saw all the bands many times - shelter, 108, mouthpiece, outspoken, into another, snapcase, strife, lifetime, undertow, unbroken, mean season, integrity, etc etc etc.

and the shows were dangerous - i've seen guns pulled and have been maced multiple times. it was very different back then.

the shows were mostly in nigger ridden hellholes. dc was awful back then.

at one show, at the safari club, in 1996 or so, this fat girl from my hs was walking across the street to the venue and an obese black bitch in a saturn hit her. the fat girl flew up in the air LOL. the lady stopped for a second but thought better of staying and i heard her say "naw, fuck all yall white muthafuckas" and she peeled out.

anotehr time, also at the safari, my friend was waiting in line to get in and this homeless nig straight knocked him out. clocked him when he wasn't looking. lol.

i agree with you. i think it says that you appreciate advanced songwriting and aren't worried about indie dogma. it's almost verboten to say TT is a top pavement album. but it unquestionably is. it's wonderful. i celebrate their entire catalogue but the songwriting and production is so good on TT.

Nigel has one of those Neumann U47's that were the kind used on Frank Sinatra's voice back in the Rat Pack era. All of Thom's studio vox from the early days used that microphone. They're like 25k on Reverb depending on condition.

To be clear it's the original U47 with the tube transformer, not the modern FET version.

Reminds me of this 180 anecdote I vaguely remember:

The French indie rock band Phoenix used the exact Harrison 4032 recording console that mixed Michael Jackson's legendary 1982 album Thriller to mix their fifth studio album, 2013's Bankrupt!

The Connection

Guitarist Laurent Brancowitz found the historic mixing console listed on eBay.

The band bought it for $17,000 from a studio owner in California and shipped it to Paris.

They briefly considered naming their album Alternative Thriller as a nod to the gear.

They did not try to recreate the Thriller sound, but wanted to work with a unique piece of music history.

if they spent half as much time on songwriting as they did on gear then maybe that would have been a good album. really makes you think.

wtf did you not read me n zurich's egregious subthread wasteland about Terror Twilight the other day?

tl;dr it's obviously the best one despite Stephen Malkmus being a narcissist and hating on it because Nigel Godrich made it Too Good

i still have to put it behind slanted, but you can make a case for TT being the best.

it's the one i listen to most now.

i've gotten autistically obsessed with a few artists in my life where i listened to nothing but that band/artist for about 2-3 years.

they are as follows, in order: the smiths/morrissey, the beatles, pavement, the rolling stones, iron maiden
