Than a $1m house

"Once you get past a certain price point, a larger share of the additional money can go into things that disproportionately improve the actual house: custom millwork, better windows and doors, stone and hardwood instead of veneers and vinyl, higher-end cabinetry and appliances, better lighting, more complicated architecture, higher ceilings, better soundproofing, better mechanical systems, and much more expensive finish work.

By contrast, a lot of houses around the $1 million mark, especially in expensive markets, are expensive primarily because of land, location, and square footage. You can end up with a 3,500-square-foot house that still has essentially mass-market construction: hollow-core doors, basic drywall details, commodity cabinets, cheap flooring, builder-grade hardware, fiberglass showers, ordinary windows, and generic fixtures. It is a lot of house, but not necessarily a particularly well-made or luxurious house.

That creates something resembling a threshold effect. Going from $500,000 to $1 million might mostly buy you more bedrooms, more land, or a better neighborhood. Going from $1 million to $3 million can sometimes move you into an entirely different category of construction, where the house is not merely larger but materially nicer at almost every point you touch or see.

There is an important caveat, though: this depends enormously on location. In San Francisco, Manhattan, Los Angeles, etc., another $2 million may mostly be paying for land and scarcity. In a lower-cost market, the difference between a $1 million and $3 million house can be enormous because construction quality becomes a much larger component of the price."

Now rate this 3.5 million dollar house https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/13800-Goodall-Rd-Lake-Oswego-OR-97034/48225148_zpid/

small, uncomfortable, tiny pool with sharp edes your kids will crack their heads on, tiny yard, in oregon, gay modern decor that's going to look retarded once it gets dated and your kids mess the place up. the ice maker on that fridge in the butler's pantry will break within a year and will be a constant pain in the ass. living room is retarded cramped and gay and the open air patio door will probably never get used unless you don't mind bugs in your house.

nice trendy looking place tho

SNK tried this with consoles to middling success. The NEO Geo AES originally cost $649 in 1990. Like $2000 in today's money, it was not 4-5 times better than the NES though. And the SNES and Sega Genesis were coming out soon. It was an aspirational console for absent divorced dads to buy for their kids they were "emotionally parenting"

The Console is only half the battle. You need games. And a big user base. They were too focused on the tech. Same reason "Laserdisc" failed.

i think that's wrong. 200% better is a lot better. generally residential price-to-value does scale mostly linearly

the price points for high end homes have more to do with inventory than the actual physical qualities of the home, land, location etc. there are only going to be so many high end homes that meet certain criteria in an area. a house can end up significantly more or less expensive than it would otherwise be based on whether or not wealthy people have other options in the area

high end spec builders do a solid amount of research to figure out exactly which features people in an area really want and which are underserved in the area's current inventory

i think this effect is actually present in gaming because there's a "ceiling" for what poor redditors can afford. companies price everything at that ceiling because the goytroons will always pay the max for everything no matter how sloptacular it is

but then if you pay a little more, like 2x as much for better PC hardware, you're getting like 5x better performance. you're playing at 300 fps while the redditors and guatemalans playing on pirated windows are getting like 30 fps

i doubt i'll ever upgrade my 4070 unless i buy something for a local AI setup and i wouldn't be using that for gaming anyway

i run every game on pretty low settings to maximize fps anyway. fps is so much more important than anything else imo

i don't hate it. for the price it leaves me a bit cold. maybe i am more of an old house guy, not sure.

looks like they just spent a good amount of money on plants, which will look better as they have more time to grow in. as long as things were built right, i mean, it's a lot of square feet and has a lot of stuff. lots of wealthy houses on the street. seems like a higher end public high school in the area, and a south suburb of portland or.

edit: how many months can you use an outdoor pool in portland OR, like 2 or 3?
