I never watch and don’t care. But this is true of all sports. Only thing that mildly interests me are Rangers vs Devils or Penguins vs Devils and maybe the World Series.

I haven’t watched a basketball game in years.

I haven’t watched a football game in years (including Super Bowl).

I don’t care about colleges.

I don’t like going to restaurants.

I don’t like going outsides.

I have chronic pain and perpetually am in a foul mood.

NIL has destroyed college basketball. Not only are the kids mercenaries who dont develop a genuine connection with the schools, but now any mid major program who in the past would grow through developing diamonds in the rough will lose those players immediately to a bigger program. as a result, the gap between the large programs and mid majors has never been bigger and we are seeing very few upsets, so its not exciting.

nil hurts at the hs recruitment stage b/c there's more incentive to go to a big $$ school instead of picking a smaller school to optimize for coach / style fit / playing time / location / whatever else. but more fluid transfer portal also helps non-marquee schools in the other direction because strong players who get stuck on the bench at tier one schools transfer down. super low seed upsets are freak random events and it's not crazy to go a couple of years without a ton of them, and anyways there have been 15 and 16 seed upsets in just the last few years.

cbb is less relevant because football-driven realignment eviscerated all the big east matchups that made up at least a third of the sport's most billable rivalries and also fucked up the acc. now when you look at the top 25 in a given week it looks more and more like the cfb top 25 because the b1g and sec and big xii are soaking up the talent due to this and nil. nobody in nebraska or illinois or alabama gives a shit nor do those programs offer any intrigue to the casual fan. also doesn't help that a bunch of historic coaches just retired or got marooned to irrelevant programs.

The last two years no 13 seed or higher has won a game. Never happened in back to back years before. I think the mid majors are way more hurt by NIL since historically they have succeeded through development and cohesion, and dropping some guy who is talented but couldn't cut it at Arkansas in for a year doesn't really play to those strengths.

But you're right, the SEC schools who traditionally weren't serious about basketball all the sudden dominating all the talent with their deep pockets has contributed to the enshittification of the sport

it's possible but i think the scramble to declare the death of the high seed upset is premature, they are basically random events that happen maybe 1-3 times in a typical year. going two years in a row without them once in the tournament's 40 year modern history is no more crazy than seeing three 15 seeds make the sweet sixteen or higher three years in a row from 2021-23 after it happened only once before.

Another thing that hurt upsets is the seeding is accurate now. In the past, Miami (OH) would have been a 1 or 2 seed.

Getting old, gambling and NIL have ruined it. That said, ratings keep getting better every year so people are still watching it

Cultural dispersion means virtually everything is getting less and less important.

We are all middle aged men, though, so this is the nature of things.
