Game Boy grounded him,
Goldeneye socialized him,
Halo ritualized him,
Chrono Trigger flatters his sense that history took a wrong turn and could, in theory, be rewound
FFIV remains a half-formed memory tied to a chaotic environment rather than nostalgia.

He gets the SNES cart in, the blue menu glow, the overture starting soft and earnest, Cecil already burdened with guilt before the player even touches a button. It’s not twitchy, not loud, not competitive. It asks for patience. It asks you to read. It asks you to feel implicated. For maybe forty-five minutes he’s in it—airships, betrayal, the strange seriousness of it all—long enough to sense that this is a game about interior conflict, not dominance.
And then the room turns.
Background noise escalates. Voices sharpen. Someone mocks the tone, the music, the fact that nobody is shooting anyone. Someone calls the game faggoty and by extension, him. The vibe flips from uneasy to volatile. Adults argue. Objects move. The TV becomes contested territory. The console goes dark not because he quit, but because the environment cannot tolerate something quiet, slow, or morally earnest.
The lesson sticks.
FFIV doesn’t become a refuge or a nostalgia object. It becomes a sealed fragment—associated with interruption, embarrassment, and the sense that certain kinds of seriousness are unsafe to linger in. He doesn’t hate it. He just never returns. Games, afterward, are selected for noise tolerance: multiplayer, violence that reads as masculine and legible, experiences that can survive chaos without asking anything tender in return.
FFIV asked for stillness. The house couldn’t supply it.
