QB's routinely go til late 30's, play all 17 games a year, never get touched, and throw to wide open receivers. Stafford, like Rivers, big ben, benefited from this. on the flip, if Elway or Marino go drafted in 2013 instead of 83, they would probably average 400yrds a game.
The whole thing is similar to baseball now. Craig Biggio gets in for just being "very good" for 20 years. |

I think the game needs to be modified to let defenses back in (which does seem to be happening per your point above). But a lot of this is my nostalgia blinding me. I'm an 80s kid so to me they'll never be a better one than Elway - and his numbers were shit compared to even a guy like jared goff. but you had to be amazing to complete passes back then - and it was a joy to watch. |
