I tried it on PC and literally couldn’t get the plane to move after trying for an hour. Googling just brought me to Engineering discussions about yaw, pitch, stabilizers, and the state of flight sim writ large and AAA gaming. Is the Xbox version more retard friendly? I want to do 9/11.

There’s more than the controller at play, champ. Take-off requires like 10,000hours to master.

I’ve always wanted a flight sim with realistic damage modeling and failure modes. I want to see fires start, loss of hydraulics, loss of fuel pressure, clogged pitot tubes, microcracking in the fuselage, sudden losses of power etc. Does this allow that?

MSFS 2024 does not. I don't know of one that does it very well.

Yeah it’s an interesting niche topic in gaming that would be a fun topic to think about. I don’t know why the market has never developed a commercial flight sim focused on this or at least that had robust capabilities in it. My three leading theories are:

(a) it doesn’t appeal to the autistmos who just want to move planes around precisely from airport to airport with no issues and could almost be “offended”;

(b) it violates some sort of ethical / industry code of safety to encourage that type of gameplay;

(c) the industry, which supports these games, says it’s a big no no because it could create the impression their core products are unsafe.

I think there are responses to each of those concerns and a game that focused on this aspect of simming would be fun as fuck. Obviously it’s a key feature of commercial simulator training.

It 100% is. The whole point of the commercial sims is to model those sort of scenarios down to very tiny failure modes. If I were creating a competing sim I would absolutely use that as one of my key differentiating features but I wonder then if e.g., Boeing or Airbus would try to stop the use of their planes (not sure if they could—that’s an interesting IP question).

My friend's Boomer dad used to be on the computer with flight simulators all the time when I was over there watching my friend Beat Sephiroth. To this day he is still simulating flight and building model airplanes in the basement and sleeping in separate bedrooms from his wife. What is it with Boomers and fucking planes.

It’s about Flight on a commercial mass scale still being novel in their childhoods. The same thing will happen for the first generation that experiences the mass commercialization of space and then it will become quotidian for subsequent generations (although different phases of space commercialization may evoke similar sentiments in different generations).

Most def. I have heard they should be set up on a dedicated circuit and that once they're assembled, it's a bitch to move, but yeah... I believe I am heading the direction of a DOF reality 3 axis rig
