Sure it’s scarce and durable but who cares? You can’t actually do any practical shit with it so it could always lose all its inherent value. Why wouldn’t a scarce currency that society is dependent on existentially (like oil or something) be worth more?

you burn oil and it's gone. gold can be reused over and over and over and over again and it never loses its luster. it's rare and magical. that's why it's so valuable.

can be reused as a means of measurement and for artistic expression and that’s how it commands high value. what a fraud existence life is

i mean we have to use some arbitrary thing as a store and transfer of value. might as well be something extremely malleable and indestructible. and it's rarity makes it necessarily more valuable than the alternatives (silver, copper) it's more efficient for states and super richmos than having to store shit tons of inferior metals. in hindsight it seems pretty obvious that gold was chosen.

a better question is why precious gems are so valuable when they can be so easily smashed into dust.

idk bro there seems to be some logistical problems with using large quantities of a flameable liquid as a currency. do you think we should be wheeling in barrels of oil into whole food to pay for groceries?
