I don't have an internal narrator, I reduce abstract thought/feeling into speech in real time, and I rarely formulate thoughts into mental words

Odds that I am ensouled?

some people hear their thoughts in sentences/phrases, as a little voice inside their head. like "it's raining out, so I should wear a jacket."

some of us think in abstract thoughts and connections, allowing us to quickly work through complex chains of logic without having to lay it out step by step in words. then, when we speak, we're just articulating the thoughts that are already floating around as concepts.

The internal narrator concept is that some (most? many at least) have a voice in their head narrating many of their observations throughout the day ("oh, there's Brenda, she looks happy. I wonder if things are better between her and her husband.")

Some people (most? many at least) think in sentences/words and then vocalize them. Like having an internal conversation to work things through ("Hmm, I don't know, is that right? Let's see, if we assume that's right, then that would mean that Israel might NOT be a good target for aid. But if that's true, then Israel might not even properly be classified as an "ally." There's no way that can be true. So the entire premise must be wrong.")

Some people say that the internal "voice" is an indication of having a soul

The one thing I do that falls into this category of things is that I read words aloud in my head. I've never tried to just skim and absorb without reading. But my reading comprehension and recall is top tier. Makes me think I should see if I can train myself to read without the narrator just to see if I can

for me I generally don't subvocalize when I read, which allows me to read way faster than I could if I had to hear the words. the exceptions are when I'm reading in a different language or something really dense with long-ass sentences.

I also subvocalize when I need to remember a series of numbers (or letters) like an MFA code. also if I'm planning my words very carefully before speaking.

see above - my recall definitely isn't as good as yours though, it's not BAD but not exceptional. also, if I'm really rushing like if I'm arguing with someone on the internet, sometimes I miss a critical word like "not" lmao. the way I read is kinda weird like my eyes just sweep over the text and I see entire sentences or phrases at once. I asked AI once and it said most people do that to some extent, like they'll process a few words at once that they're really familiar with, but not usually entire sentences.

one of my best friends is a firefighter - we grew up together, same age. he did 2 years of community college at kingsborough in brooklyn then did EMS for a year and has been FDNY ever since, almost 20 years now.

not flame - i believe this guy has not had read or written anything AT ALL - for decades. happiest guy i know. biggest problems in life are trying to not cheat on his wife (firehouse in Manhattan) and the fact that his friends don't wanna go out to drink as much as he does so he has to drink more than he'd like to with guys from his block in garden city

very interesting but entirely speculative, which is glaring because there ARE intelligent, illiterate people out there so this could be studied empirically. unless he doesn't think someone can be pre-literate in a literate society even if they can't read individually?
