i was a partner at baker hostetler (dc office). the firm overall is ttt in that they pay market only for first years and only in major markets.

so a first year in dc, ny or la is making $225k and a fourth year probably makes $294k or some random number that is substantially below market.

IIRC first years in clv made way less. when first years were at 190, i think first years in ohio were in the 160 range, maybe closer to 150.

JONES DAY is the #1 firm obviously, with BH #2. i don't think JD pays lockstep, but i've heard their pay is better.

another data point - as a labor atty i worked with the erisa guys regularly. one of the doods in cleveland told me that they lost a really good erisa associate (6-7th year) who DOUBLED her salary going to another biglaw firm. so it's possible that even if a first year makes 180 or 190 in cleveland, they have senior associates barely making 300.

I hire people like this for my shitlaw firm. I start them out at about 85k a year with limited benefits.

Some of the stories that I hear from these people about previous employers are crazy. I appear to pay way above market for shitlaw associates. Standard comp seems to be mid five figures. However, that number is really more revenue than profit since it typically covers *everything* including CLE's, bar dues, computer, travel, etc. The least that I have encountered was a chick from a shitlaw firm that was dying, who was making 45k.

In my state, there is a panoply of TTT law schools. But they are not all the same. One takes kids who can't crack 160 on that LSAT but puts them through a rigorous program and actually has a high bar passage rate. Those kids make awesome shitlawyers. They do a lot of clinics and trial prep classes so I can throw them into working their own cases pretty much right off the bat. It's awesome. Hired on a Monday, making money for me on a Tuesday. They're also really humble and glad to have a job because our state's Biglaw such as it is hires from prestigious schools and looks at graduates of their school like filthy animals.

side note on her, at the time i worked for this 5'6" fat jewish man who was almost 70 and was a closet case. he hit on me constantly, i've poasted about that before.

anyway, he is abrasive as shit and fights with everyone around him (except me, ljl) so he and this lady hated each other.

i actually poasted about this in the last week or so, but in one of those depositions i referred to above, thatcher had this lady on the witness stand and they started giggling about how "handsome" i was. thatcher may have smoked out that this guy was a closet fag or something and was trying to get under his skin. he got so pissed at her basically openly flirting with me.

she then started offering me a job when we were on breaks in the depo (i lived right by her office, but the solo's office was in baltimore, which was a 45 min drive from my house). he completely hit the roof, it was lol.

Clerk at local county court, then work in small firm for a couple years to learn the ropes, then hang a shingle. That's a decent enough GPA from a decent enough law school that he could definitely make it.

State government sinecure.

Regional law firm or regional law firm to regional in house.

The path isn't as clear as T6 ls->v25 firm, but there are plenty of decent options and outcomes for someone who works hard and takes advantage of opportunities. In a lot of ways, the paths are better than a V25 associate striving for a few years before getting up or outed. The Akron grad will probably have a lake house in 10 years while the t6 grad will be wondering if he can afford kids.

There is a huge range of outcomes. Some of these guys, usually chill fratty bros with a little business sense, can do stuff like that within a few years of starting practice. Others are organization men by temperament and would be suited to working in Biglaw, if only they were smarter. They really struggle since the institutions that they join tend to be shittier in many different ways. They never make it to the lake house, or anywhere close.

CR. I doubt there would be any difference between a 3.3 Akron grad and a 3.7 gpa OSU grad in terms of who is more likely to make it as a solo. Either one has the baseline intellect, beyond which more raw brainpower doesn't really help. So it'll come down to hustle, work ethic, building connections, charisma. The only difference is that OSU grad can work at Jones Day Cleveland for a few years if he's inclined.

tOSU guy in the top 30% or whatever might land a spot at JD. my wife is from cleveland and it's a fairly provincial city with lots of local pride. i could see someone slipping in there, where the NY, DC, LA offices wouldn't even look at the guy.

at baker H, i knew a guy who'd been hired as a doc review attorney (on the bernie madoff litigation) who somehow convinced the firm he had a few brain cells and they took him on as a partner-track associate. i'm guessing his pedigree was SPS, but he was from cleveland (later moved to columbus). fwiw, he is pretty good.

Sometimes some general state law bureaucrat job. prosbro or PD. or, closely related running a shoestring private practice and taking indigent runover cases. city attorney's office or mayoral advisor. part-time traffic court judge in some podunk town. ALJ for civil service claims. an unending panoply of opportunity :)

OP, there are guys like this who just innately get it and take to shitlaw like a duck to water. They can easily make several hundred k a year, and do. There are guys who hate it and commit suicide. It is highly dependent on the person. Average after a decade or two is probably high five/low six figures but that doesn't really mean anything, like saying the average score of two teams in a football game.
