The people who go into PE tend to come from the same narrow pipeline. Elite universities, bulge bracket banks, consulting firms. There’s a job interview phenotype that’s real. If you didn’t fit it, you were filtered out before you got in. It feels exclusive in the worst way: not based on ability, but polish. It reminds people of the parts of the "meritocracy" that are fake. Private equity doesn’t answer to you. It answers to a tight circle of limited partners. It doesn’t have to pretend to care what the customer thinks beyond EBITDA. And that lack of public accountability makes it feel more sinister imho. But really, what the hell is the difference between "private" and "public" equity? Discuss. |

Public companies don't leverage themselves to the hilt in order to increase ROE. |

They’d have been middle of the road suckers and PE comes along and suddenly they have a million bucks in the bank. Oddly enough it’s the more senior people that end up getting fucked the hardest often times. They don’t realize they’re given worthless equity to keep some shit comapany afloat that will be sold off in a fire sale in 3 years even though the PE firm knows it’s likely to go that way. Last I checked businesses need wagies to function and so it wouldn’t benefit a sponsor to fire everyone. As someone who works in this space, the horror stories where a sponsor comes in and strip mines a firm are more fiction than fact, and where that is indeed the case it’s either from ancient history or is truly warranted (i.e., b/c the firm is overbloated and does have fat that can and should be trimmed). I won’t argue that they create value though so you’re right on that point.
As for your second point, just LOL if you don’t think pubcos aren’t up to the same shenanigans. Look at the current M&A market, it’s all pubco strategic transactions where acquiriers are leveraging themselves to the tits. |
