lol cr. and also cr on the volvos: they've been going downhill under chinese ownership, just seem like maintenance on them is getting more expensive relative to the machine. but cutting the other direction, volvo ads are pretty good lately, doing these really long high production content based on family/safety https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQX-QXxwGvA

No. You might be thinking Audi since a lot of them are the exact same platform. The Q7 and Cayenne are on the same platform, the Macan and Q5 are on the same platform, their EVs are on the same platform and basically the same car with minor differences. But they're also super expensive in the US for the same reason (factories are in Germany).

Basically, if you're American and want a German car then BMW is the obvious answer.

Yes actually. I always used the depreciation to my advantage too. They also have a good CPO program so you can still get some warranty and they let you buy more years of coverage. Porsche does this too but with high resale values it isn't such a good value.

Well-equipped 911s and Caymans, yes.

Others will lose a smaller percentage to depreciation but will cost significantly more to operate for similar performance. E.g. a Cayenne might lose 45-48% of value after 5 years while an X5 loses 50-54%, but the X5 will be much cheaper to operate on a dollar basis because the Cayenne costs so much more when new.

This is really the rift between enthusiasts and normal people. Nerds can't stomach performance SUVs because they're not a real trackday race car. Which is like, who effing cares lol. None of these people who buy high performance luxury sports cars are real racecar drivers either. What percentage of Porsche 911 GT3 owners ever take it to even one track day? If you're legitimately into motorsport as your real life hobby it's cool but 98% of consumers have to have zero interest. Hence performance SUVs.

As others have pointed out, Porsche builds for sporting experience first in every product they release. And something like the 911 is a pure sports car built on a dedicated sports car platform, whereas even BMW’s sports cars are built on top of a base mainline product platform (eg the M3 is still built off of a regular 3 series platform).

Porsches are also far more connected to the road from a driver feel and engagement perspective, whereas BMWs have become extremely numb. Sure, many BMWs are fast, but you feel nothing driving them.

Strangely enough, the most engaging driver’s cars today primarily come from Porsche or Japan.

Hard to really put into words, but you don’t need an expensive car even to understand this. Generally it feels like you can “feel” what the car is doing and where it has grip going into and coming out of corners. If it has a manual transmission, the shifter is engaging and the clutch point is clear. The steering should give real feedback based on the road and not just feel like a sim rig or totally fake.

IMO the most engaging cars also are fun to drive without needing to go 90+ mph.

Yeah a lot of old japanese cars were fun because they were RWD and had good manual transmissions.

The answer to OP's question is that some Porsches put the engine in the ass-end and give you RWD plus a stick shift. That's an engineering feat no other company will attempt. The Porsches with the engine in the front are a different story.

Actually a bunch of them were FWD and still super fun - like the old Acura Integras. What made them fun was not that it was RWD vs FWD (many American alternatives were RWD) but that these cars were very light and the high revving Japanese engines made them far more agile/nimble than American cars of that era.

911 is closer to luxury sedan than pure sports car

Porsche has gotten farther away from the driving experience than BMW with their failed EV production and 4-door sedans beating 911 specs now on paper

M3 (and 2 and 4, 5 and 8 for that matter) all handle better than a basic 911

BMW had more manual stick shift options

And M cars have higher ADM by % than 911s last time I checked and the waiting list for an M3/M4 allocation was worse than a Rolex

Other than that I mostly agree with you

To be fair, the X5 is probably the best car BMW makes and is a great SUV.

Can't imagine ever buying a car due to what women think. Women think about crazy shit but they don't think about cars.

Yeah, to the extent they think about cars it is either a nice car or it is not. I guess there is about two levels of nice - BMW/Mercedes/Lexus/Porsche and then another step up for Ferrari/Lambo because they know they're more expensive.

I think they care even less than that. It's "Will I be embarrassed to be seen in this?" or not. A newer, clean Accord is perfectly fine if they like the guy.

Women fuck guys fresh out of prison with no license and no car because they have a cocaine hookup.

It's a lot cheaper to be a scumbag than it is to own a Ferrari. And some guys with a Ferrari can't get laid. In fact, probably a lot of Ferrari owners can't.

A nice car that signals wealth/status is a plus. A normal car is neutral. A shitty car is a negative.

I think a car is no longer the status symbol it used to be. RSF could just talk about vacations in France and that would end it for any guy with a cool car. Cars just aren't cool!

Every chick who has fucked a guy with a Lambo has fucked a guy who lives with his mom and has a criminal record and no car and his license is suspended.

I don't actually think that is accurate. Not every chick is attracted to criminal losers.

Isn't z4 actually better looking abd more functional than boxster? If it's just about the porsche steering wheel, might as well get a cayenne that every fat woman in my building has.

BMW doesn't make drivers' cars any more, it's just for signaling. But yeah sure z4 probably has a bigger trunk and more comfortable for super long drives

If you want to signal status just get a bentley convertible. It's constantly displayed at my local shopping mall in Miami. It basically signals to a woman that you are willing to drop extra $200k just because of looks. Same reason you would buy a more expensive house, etc. BMW/Mercedes is something that welfare people in Harlem buy(they just buy it used)
