The juxtapositions are Striking imho
Led Zeppelin vs. the Rolling Stones
Zeppelin has forty songs normal people recognize within ten seconds. The Stones have six songs, a tongue logo, and a 60-year press release.
Queen vs. The Who
Queen has an obscene number of songs embedded in public life. Sports songs, movie songs, karaoke songs, wedding songs, funeral songs. The Who has “Baba O’Riley,” “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” and fifty years of being described as explosive.
Fleetwood Mac vs. Jefferson Airplane
Fleetwood Mac made songs. Jefferson Airplane made a photograph of the 1960s.
Creedence Clearwater Revival vs. Grateful Dead
CCR existed for about five minutes and left behind twenty indestructible songs. The Grateful Dead toured for thirty years and left behind a parking-lot civilization.
Steely Dan vs. Frank Zappa
Steely Dan has a dozen songs that quietly colonized grocery stores, bars, cars, offices, and divorced-dad consciousness. Zappa has 700 albums and nobody can hum one without first explaining why you are too stupid to understand it.

i cosign this poast
the stones' run from beggars banquet to exile (and maybe goats head soup) is absolutely perfect. if it werent for satanic majesties being bleh, you could say their perfect album run goes from aftermath to goats head soup.
sticky fingers and exile are absolutely flawless.
zeppelin is fine, and i acknowledge how influential they are but they just don't grab me like that.

"LZ also probably had a bigger impact on the direction of rock music and alternative music for sure"
i used to think this but would "alternative music" even exist without raw power? the stones were a huge influence for james williamson.
cant imagine there would be punk, post-punk and all the stuff following in that vein without that album and iggy pop's other 70s work after it. iggy didnt like zeppelin at all

There is some kind of unspoken cultural divide here. Literally every white person I know who grew up in ordinary America and was born between 1965 and maybe 1990 is very familiar with LZ. They are one of those bands where everyone's siblings or friends somehow had a few CDs around that you inherited of got into as a gateway to the band. LZ is good enough that people would pursue it on their own, not just hear it casually. They have at least a half dozen songs that almost anyone's mom would recognize .
The RS worship in here is coming from oddballs or non-whites . Zurich for instance is deranged weirdo who grew up worshipping DC hardcore, some of the worst music and the worst 'scene' ever, ruled by awful straight edge socially maladroit loners who lived to prey on younger kids and break their hands punching brick walls alone in alley to 'prove' something. The lack of recognition of the simple melodic achievement and innovative arrangements and precursor to so much more music that LZ pulled off in a short span of time is absurd. They must have just had no contact with it growing up, which again correlates with an unusual and probably lonely youth experience.
LZ generated more classic and well known songs in ten years than RS have in 60 years. and while LZ had their clear influences, it's inarguable that the RS directly ripped off and aped far more than LZ. Worshipping the Stones as the epitome of cool is just laughable too, sort of like idealizing owning a shitty Harley.

Who are the modern equivalents -
More hits than you'd think: Blink 182, RHCP, Green Day, Fallout Boy, Weezer, Maroon 5 (huge example of this if they count), Creed, Nickelback, Matchbox 20
Less hits than you'd think: Foo Fighters, Radiohead, Pearl Jam, The Strokes, Arcade Fire, The Black Keys, Metallica
Medium: The Killers, Panic At the Disco, My Chemical Romance

Your mileage may very but here is the list - I think they had their early hits from like 2005-2007 and then every 5 years they had songs like Centuries which were played to death in like the intros to sporting events. I'm not sure anyone actively listened to them but they were played on TV 10,000 times. Similarly the Immortals song is always on Disney Radio and they sing the theme song to Spidey and the Amazing Friends so anyone with a son has heard that 5,000 times.
"Sugar, We're Goin Down" (From Under the Cork Tree - 2005)
"Dance, Dance" (From Under the Cork Tree - 2005)
"Thnks fr th Mmrs" (Infinity on High - 2007)
"My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up)" (Save Rock and Roll - 2013)
"Centuries" (American Beauty/American Psycho - 2015)
"Uma Thurman" (American Beauty/American Psycho - 2015)
"Immortals" (Big Hero 6 Soundtrack/American Beauty/American Psycho - 2014)
----
Here is the update
Centuries was theme for the first College Football Playoffs on ESPN
Uma Thurman was also used for CFP
Light Em Up was in all sports but in particular the MLB Playoff theme

It's weird how they became such a corporate entity. They had a natural organic fanbase after From Under the Cork Tree with a lot of crossover with MCR and P!atD as leading mall emoers.
And then I think something shifted where they got to a point where they were like OK we have this rare and unique talent in life, how do we use it to make as much money as possible. I know, we'll make songs targeting large corporations.
There's some people who are gifted and they just have no interest in expressing themselves creatively. They viewed their art as just a vehicle to print money so they could do other things. They never had any presence in rock culture after their early years. Just how many properties can I buy with my gift in life. They took being soulless to a new level.
Edit: holy shit Pat Stump took the bug pill.

Jane's Addiction had ONE SONG and the rest was Perry Farrell being a loon and Dave Navarro being really hot.
Muse has a lot of incredible songs no one is familiar with and then some really famous ones that were produced by hip-hop producers.
Alice in Chains is a band with a weird cult following. They were musically unique but I think a little overrated. Not as majestic as everyone says.

not reading thread, but stones song off top of my head
satisfaction
cant always get what you want
sympathy for the devil
under my thumb
paint it black
jumping jack flash
ruby tuesday
start me up
beast of burden
brown sugar
... thats ten without pausing typing that are instantly recognizable. i may have missed another 10 obvious ones
Then you can get into Tier 2 songs like the disco one "I miss you" (?), the "She's so cold" one, "waiting on a friend" and others that dominated radio and are basically ubiquitous
By song 35+ I grant you, one starts to need to be a fan to know the song.
but lol

all of your music opinions are basically your subjective viewpoint passed off as objective fact. you do this in every single music thread.
you can't really argue with a straight face that LZ has more recognizable songs than the stones. many people ITT have said that, and it's absolutely true. LZ has stairway, rock n roll, maybe 1-2 more that your average person (who says "i like everything" when you ask what music they're into) would know. but that same person would know satisfaction, under my thumb, gimme shelter, beast of burden, wild horses, paint it black, angie, start me up, sympathy for the devil, you can't always get what you want, jumpin jack flash, and probably a few others. they'd know these songs just from movie soundtracks alone.
your average shithead on the street would probably even know a couple deep cuts just from watching scorcese movies (like can't you hear me knockin, mentioned elsewhere in this thread).
the LZ songs named ITT as being ubiquitous are mostly laughable. people do not know those songs, period.
your response: "but i don't really know any stones songs and i know 30 LZ songs." explain how this is relevant to the thread.

All of those are still in regular rotation on rock format radio and people born before 1990 that like rock know those songs.

frank ocean is MFCR. i like his music fine but he is in the running for most overrated artist of his era.
reconsider on depeche mode. they have several big hits and a few broadly recognizable songs beyond those. among fans of this kind of music their songs are very well known and they were more or less a glorified singles band similar to new order. they have like ten songs that are in regular radio rotation.
