Pro sports all include almost half the league in their playoffs. Seems fair to have the top 25-33% make it, and to have the top 10% get byes and the next 15-20% have to win a play in to get to the main bracket. So it preserves rewards/advantages for the very best teams, and admits enough teams that the first teams cut will be mediocre 3+ loss teams that didn’t beat anyone good.
