He turned it on. If you are watching his workouts from a quiet, hidden corner, especially in the off season you could see how intensively he started hitting it — he became another man, almost another species at 30. He’d be in the gym at 3 a.m., 4 a.m., hitting plates harder than I’d seen anyone do big style and eating absolutely copious quantities of cinnamon, the raw Vietnamese type, and you could just sense he was on the ball in a “matter of type” different way, same like with Looken and Jerrinder.

You can safely assume that most players are on something at levels that won’t flunk a test or during a training phase when they’re not tested.

But he’s not the biggest outlier. Always hit for power and has continued to optimize in that direction now that consensus strategy is that it’s fine to be a HR or strike out guy so long as you hit behind some guys with decent OBP and draw a few walks because pitchers are afraid to throw strikes to you. Baseball conventional wisdom until recently frowned on batting averages below .250 and 200-SO seasons.

Much crazier examples exist in the no-testing steroidpalooza days, like Clemens and Bonds being in peak physical condition at 40, Nomar converting from a scrawny infielder into a power hitter, Canseco looking like some kind of half-orc drawn by an imaginative child.

Yea this is a good post. He's always swung for the fences and I can see how he'd just get better at it once he's in his late 20s. He had great output for at leasta couple seasons with the cubs and he got elite at more like 27 than 30.
