I’m a hospital nurse and one of the fairly routine things I have to deal with, to the extent you could ever call it routine, is patients on their deathbeds. One in particular stands out to me as especially heartwarming. This man, let’s call him Joe, had been on the decline for several days and you could tell he was nearing the end. It’s late at night, his family had stepped out to get a quick bite to eat, I’m in the room with him and he starts screaming aloud about how much despair he’s in and how he doesn’t want to die. Between sobs he begs for more life. He screams about how horrible it will be to experience the cessation of his existence. As he’s vomiting from sheer disgust and revulsion at the realization of the end of his life and his impotence to avert it, he dies.

Thank you for sharing this heart warming story. I’ll be holding Joe in my thoughts tonight - both his terror and his release.

Sometimes at night I think about how Jen on Dawson's Creek died without her parents ever coming to visit her on her deathbed once. Not even the writers loved her enough to give her a final emotional moment of reconciliation with her mom and dad where they apologize to her for kicking her out when she was 16 and making her live with her grandma on Cape Cod. But then I think maybe I'm the one being unreasonable. Maybe if I were dying my parents wouldn't keep a 24 hour vigil by my bed like I would hope. Maybe my family would have more important things to do. It's not like I drop everything to go visit one of my relatives whenever they're dying. Maybe my family would be afraid to look me in the eye and keep their distance.

MEN shouldnt burden others with their deaths imo. Really shouldn't even stay in the hospital or "hospice" care or whatever. When you know the jig is up with last bit of strength you should drive out to a field with a shotgun and decide either get it done that way or roll into the pond. Schedule your surviving family a fruit basket delivery with a note next day to soften the blow a bit, keep it classy.
