I was never a good coder but I did actually enjoy it, and anyone who was willing to accept the smallest amount of personal responsibility and not just be an autistic asshole could generally find a nice place to work. although I don't have kids so I don't really give much of a shit if my income gets sliced in 1/4. I've got enough Stuff at this point even being a poormo by xo standards. but it's not going to be fun for people with actual responsibilities |

In part because technology will allow for much smaller admin headcount, but also because people doing actual work are the ones creating all the actual, non-performative value.
Much ink has been spilled about skilled labor shortages. The WSJ had an article a little while back about how top level technicians at auto repair shops can make good money, but it takes a decade to reach that level. But the "good money" described is like $90,000 a year. Meanwhile some fraud sending "slacks" and talking about output from a handful of SaaS programs over Zoom (while being recorded to train AI) makes $120k and works 10% as much as the person who actually fixes things that we use in the real world.
This will change. |
