After Midway, that Siberian oil would have looked mighty tempting. And everyone knew Stalin was pinned down fighting Germany at that time.

So why didn't Japan call a lid on the Pacific war and tell the Kwantung Army to get that oil?

The Japanese could confirm based on public reporting that Russian units stationed in eastern Russia got pulled away to defend Moscow. This was reported by everyone even before Pearl Harbor got bombed. Yet Japanese leaders thought it was a trap. They were sure Stalin had left a garrison in the east. They thought Stalin was playing mind games on them. They figured America had a big navy but Russia was too high IQ

That was the Japanese army, not the navy. It's hard to rape bitches when you're on the Kido Butai.

But that only adds to the mystery. Why was the Japanese army never ordered to fight Russia? It's like raping was the only thing anyone ever told them to do

Japan was already fighting a 2 front war against the Americans and the Chinese, neither of which they were likely to win. Opening a third front against the USSR would have been suicidal. By the way, they faced the Soviets in battle before the war really kicked off in Mongolia and it was a total disaster for the Japanese.

They were planning Pearl Harbor years in advance. They knew perfectly well that they were already entering a two-front war. They had hoped the US would quickly back down but even if that happened they always knew that any attack on the USSR would be a brutal slog.

Russia was going to permanently annex land (some of which they did, btw). The US was going to rule for a while but they were confident that Americans were stupid short-sighted yokels that could eventually be kicked out again. The Russians were far scarier in this regard.

As I understand it...The Japanese got beat pretty bad by the Soviets. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battles_of_Khalkhin_Gol huge disgrace and right or wrong it was decided the Soviets were not an easy target, especially compared to the European Asian colonies the imperial navy preferred. The army favored taking the Soviet far East but after the got their asses kicked, it was a popular opinion and the army lost favor.

Then the army tries a coup

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/February_26_incident which failed and they never regained respectability. Intel sucked back then too.

1. that incident involved the Mongolian border, and the USSR's desire to prove to its allies that a defensive pact meant something. Japan wasn't even testing Soviet territory in that conflict. It was a battle of choice by the USSR, fought in order to make a point.

None of those factors were in play in December 1941, because Moscow itself was under siege by Hitler. If that if had been happening in 1939, there's no way Stalin would have committed all those forces to the east.

2. The Japanese had CONFIRMED sightings of Soviet eastern forces fighting in Moscow by December 5, 1941. They KNEW the east was unguarded. Furthermore Yamamoto had told the kang that an assault on US would end in disaster. Yet they still chose to bomb Pearl Harbor on December 7.

Yeah I kinda agree with you and we obviously see how things turned out. I think the army brought shame on itself and the disgrace unreasonably tipped the scales in the navy's favor. Also intelligence was terrible back then.
