I have an 11 yo dog and 2 young kids who are quite fond of her. Unfortunately, she has a collapsing trachea, which will progressively worsen until it suffocates her to death. Could be months, could be years. In the meantime, I can pay $5,000 for a tracheal surgery which could more or less “cure” the issue but even then she’s looking at maybe 5 years tops. I’m also Poor.

Do you live around NYC? If so then I can recommend a place.

If not, I recommend some veterinary schools. They may be cheaper, especially if you allow them to work with students on the dog (it would be supervised by faculty).

It’s much harder for human pre existing conditions to be hidden because most people are not just going to random doctors but having their claims submitted to major national insurance companies so there’s essentially a national database of your medical record through insurance claims.

For dogs its not the same.

Years of records? Most people never go the vet. We go to a walk in clinic for shots and I have those records. There’s no records of annual checkups or blood work or anything that would document any physical condition our dog has.

If some vet tomorrow said my dog had a major problem, I’d never mention that visit. I’d simply show the insurance company the records of the walk in clinics where we’ve gotten vaccines over the last few years.

Drive 10 hours to a vet in ARE country and pay $2000 for the surgery instead. Otherwise put down the dog if it looks very uncomfortable all the time. This should be a high bar, though.. Dogs are very resilient and adapt to most shit that life brings them. *takes gun out of mouth* we can learn a lot from them, actually.

i couldn't spend that type of money on a dog in good conscious. my ex (a vet) and i got in a big fight over this. it seems extraordinarily selfish consider $5k could make a lot of other pets (and humans) lives much better.

with kids you could mentally frame it as paying for their happiness but if youre poor your money is better spent elsewhere imo.

I would drop $10k on my dog for medical care without hesitation. That said, my last dog (a giant dog too) beat cancer twice, was a diabetic, lived to 13 and all of her care combined was under $10k. I never spent $5k on any single thing.

I've noticed this.

I can't say I spent a ton of time browsing dog adoption ads years ago, but it can't always have been like this.

I look at what the nearest shelter has and the vast majority are shitpits and the remainder are kinda sad looking, not particularly cute dogs.

That’s always tough and there’s no right answer. My last dog didn’t make it quite to 11 and went pretty quick, natural time for the breed. But I told myself if it ever looked like he was suffering I’d take him out for all the cheeseburgers he could eat and then give him a lethal dose of meds and sit there with him till he was gone.

I'd try to find a better price because that quote seems insane but you gotta save the dog. Even at $5k, you're renting the dog for $80/month. I'm sure if you asked your kids if they'd rather skip eating out once a month or kill the dog, they'd choose the former. This is a crossroads where you can put them more on the route to becoming autoadmit sociopaths or make them more normal.

i'd spend whatever it takes, but this is some goyishe math. at 11, the dog may die in 2-3 yrs even with the surgery -- of something related to the condition, or of other old age shit. the surgery doesnt guarantee him living until 16 by any means. that being said, i totally agree that you've got to save the dog but shop around.
