The nature of it is different. You watched whatever was on a limited number of channels which you had to flip through to figure out what was being offered.

They are presented with 400 thumbnails of shows available anytime and all the time.

prolonged screen time is actually a symptom of neurodivergence

In this study, children <40 months of age showed different trajectories of daily screen time over time. Additionally, ASD-PRS was associated with medium and long screen time during the observation period. This raises the possibility that long screen time is not a cause of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), but rather an early symptom that ASD individuals are more attracted to objects than to people.

its called brainrot for a reason

dexters lab or whatever is basically war and peace compared to the slop kids watch on youtube shorts/tiktok. it really is lowest common denominator (now largely ai generated) garbage. everything is designed for maximum attention grabbing

more importantly it's a sea of infinite distraction. for the vast majority of kids there was only so much TV you can watch before you get bored, but you can toss a tablet at a kid anywhere at any time and they will find a way to occupy themselves.

You actually had to follow the plot for the cartoons we watched.

Batman: The Animated Series;

Power Rangers;

Power Puff Girls

Each show was 22 minutes broken up over commercial breaks with a cogent plot kids had to use their brains to follow.

The shit on YouTube now is just non-stop brainrot. You literally could sit for 24 hours and never watch the same episode twice.

Does anybody know what country NASTYA is from?

If you have kids then it is obvious how it is rapidly addictive and changes their preferences, and it is also passive. When they are playing with blocks or whatever they are talking to themselves, making up stories, running around etc.

Shitty 90s basic cable and crappy Nintendo games served as a natural way to limit that shit. Back in the day there were two Simpsons eps that ran from 6-7pm and that was it. My mom would insist on having dinner ready around 6:15 so I’d miss both episodes and I used to get pissed about it. Now kids have every Simpsons, every Disney movie, Netflix chink slop, YouTube garbage and tons of other shit at their fingertips if you don’t purposely keep them off it.

When Cartoon Network premiered, I thought I had died on gone to heaven as a kid.

24-HOUR CARTOONS!?!

Granted, they were mostly retreads of Hanna-Barbara cartoons and shit, but it was still mind-blowing to be able to watch cartoons at any hour of the day.

But even with cartoon network, I only watched certain cartoons for a certain period of time. I didn't sit there and watch non-stop episodes of "SWAT KATZ". My brain had to take a break because I didn't want to watch some dumbass episode of "Birdman"

Most of them, even back in the day — contemporaneously — did not have the addictive quality that modern games do. I only saw the first 2 levels of most beat-em-ups or have your pick of Genesis games. The only addictive games back then where you could lose hours without noticing were JRPGs (if you were Losery enough play them). If it was something like Yoshis Iskand or Super Metroid or DKC I only felt like playing for maybe 1-2 hours.

TBF we don’t give them tablets. They get to watch only whatever I put on for them on the 100 inch Samsung.

This is the only acceptable mode for screen time imo. No personal devices, just giant screens where everyone can see what's going on, the way God intended

Isn't excessive screen time closely correlated with mental health issues? Even I know I spend too much time in front of screens, and that it usually makes me feel worse.

I was in the local UMC grocer last night, it was crowded and busy and there were kids just sprinting through the aisles and screaming like ScumKids. This is a small establishment, mind you. I thought that kind of shit only happened at Aldi or whatever.

We allow a decent amount of TV but zero time on iPads and shit like that which we think are much more destructive.

I noticed among my older millennial chungus ass cousins the ones with screencuck kids they were fucking intolerable to be around, and the ones not allowed were completely normal happy kids. I won't even let my kids have light bulbs in their rooms not flame.

Posters here seemed to have nailed it.

If my kids are watching full length feature movies with plot and themes, I'm thrilled. If they're watching cartoons that's fine. I get annoyed when they start watching "Is It Cake" for the 20th time. But we limit the amount of Youtube type bullshit they watch to like 10 minutes before bed (which is by far their favorite).

Same thing with video games. If they're playing a Pokemon RPG or something on the TV i think that's actually good, if they're playing some candy crush for kids type bullshit on their tablets its a problem.

Their behavior validates this as well.
