idk big technology and surrogate activity hater here but it was about as close as a surrogate activity can possibly be to the genuine article

if we found a new undiscovered continent on earth, say atlantis, we wouldn't call it a "surrogate activity" to explore and colonize it. it would pretty straightforwardly be normal human behavior

that's what i'm getting at here

maybe if it was part of a genuine and concerted effort at colonization, but it wasn't. at best it was a "maybe we'll need this later" thing and we never got back to it

yeah but that's more because our civilization ended. not because we failed in the follow through

compare to something like those goofy ass boomers who went down in their homemade submarine to see the titanic and got crushed. now *that's* a surrogate activity

idk probably when we started straight up niggermaxxing instead of continuing with space exploration

that's as good of a cutoff as any

The Apollo lunar landing program ended with Apollo 17 in 1972.

Subsequent planned missions—Apollo 18, 19, and 20—were canceled between 1968 and 1970 due to federal budget cuts and shifting political priorities.

Once the US achieved its geopolitical goal of beating the Soviets in 1969, political support for the massive spending dissolved quickly.

It was a stepping stone on the path to being multiplanetary, which is the only way our species survives any of the many events that would end all human life on earth.
