My boomer dad gets borderline sexual gratification from paying taxes and talking about how he has to pay his taxes and what he does to pay his taxes and when the next time is he has to pay his taxes
Really embarrassing stuff

being a responsible UMC boomer reasonably required shit like paying 10-15 paper bills each month with payment slips and stamps and writing out envelopes, balancing your checkbook by hand, checking over the monthly credit card statement sent in the mail, doing your taxes by hand using tax tables, etc.
just like we spend hours setting up and typing in 2FA codes for our water bill and changing our password every 90 days to a 30 character pw as if someone is going to hack our water bill account to pay our bill for us, boomers had to do this shit.

As much as people complain about the money wasted on subscription services, it beats having to write out a physical check and get stamps and mail shit every month just to pay basic bills.
I started getting a job in the early 2000s with a debit card and checks and totally missed all that.

Funny anecdote of a world that is no longer possible. My godparents, when first married and working at their first jobs and with a baby on the way, found that money was indeed quite tight and there were months when they just didn't have enough in the checking accounts to pay all the bills.
In those days the bills were always paid by check. So my godfather would write a check to the gas company and a separate check to the water department. But he'd put the gas check in the envelope for the water department, and vice versa. Oops. Absent minded, you know! No problem, these things happen, cancel the checks, send the right one in next month. No penalties.
Always laughed about it and it got them through the occasional tight months. Today he and his wife, in their mid 80s, own a 42 foot sailboat, a house on Cape Cod and a cottage in the Bahamas and a condo in Florida, and so far in 2026 they have been on two European cruises and at this minute hosting all the grandkids at Cape Cod before they scatter back to their colleges. Life is good.

There was a much greater expectation that you could and would care about local taxation, bond issuances, school board governance, prominent local companies, etc. Responsible UMC boomers read their local papers. There was meaningful local journalism, politics was much less national in scope, celebrity culture was more bounded.
I'm not exactly saying things were more competent. More that the things people cared about, often stupidly and innumerately, were much directly tied to their lives. "Paying bills" felt like you directly engaging with local institutions that partly belonged to you and you could sometimes influence, not having Anthropic or Amazoid yoink some amount of money out of your wallet every month or the school board somehow getting 78% voting in favor of a "millage" that gets spent on tackle boxes full of buttplugs.
You might know the name of the VP at the local bank who was at your branch 2 days a week, would personally review large loan applications, and got breakfast at the diner near your office. Maybe he was an idiot, but he was your idiot. Most people were white. People unironically joined institutions like the Kiwanis Club or Rotary International. No one really knew or cared who CEOs of big companies were because those companies were like weather; high school principals were well-known community figures; "well-known community figures" were a thing that existed because most of your life was IRL, and even most of your media was IRL-adjacent and local.
I can't keep talking about this. Fuck my ass. Boomers paying bills was peak civilization.
