there are thousands of "shows" and they're all equally like 6/10. there are fewer laughably badly made shows than there used to be I guess. but some of those "bad" shows were fun in their own way.

Also, TV shows are all targeted at people who want to see The Same Thing over and over again.

Other than occasional obscure message board posts, virtually no content created since, say, 2008 or so will be entertaining or meaningful or poignant in 25 or 250 years.

There are books, music, movies, plays, TV shows, and fine art from decades or centuries ago that still hold up. It's a shame that next to nothing from the post-modern world seems like it will.

The same boring shitheads are in charge of movies, tv shows, and now video games. Even shit that is celebrated as "interesting" like "One Battle After Another" boils down to some 2d white supremacist (who associates with other comically 2d white supremacist groups) that is a cartoon villain and to the extent there are interesting possibilities (oh, it turns out the biracial girl is actually his daughter!) they are ignored or resolved in the most uninteresting or unrealistic way possible.

This garbage actually won an Academy Award for Best Picture.

Until about 3/4 of the way through I thought it he was going to essentially make this two groups of fuck-ups fighting one another with the daughter being the one person who wasn't a fuck up and having to deal with both sides because of a comical twist of fate (this would have actually been interesting) but no, that's not what the movie actually was. "Lib fantasy" isn't interesting at all.

I don't disagree but this POS won the Academy Award for Best Picture. If this was some "made for Netflix" movie on the level of "Don't Look Up" I wouldn't have made a post on it. When that is held up as the apex of movies for 2025 then that demonstrates the point the OP was making.

The Academy Award has been a joke for some time. Lots of indefensible choices. I haven't watched the ceremony in ten years since they started giving it to the wokest films. They have made a mockery of the institution. Just Meryl Streep ranting about feminism and Orange Man for hours. It's gay af.

But at least PTA made like five movies that should have won. As a lifetime achievement it's more than fair.

Prestige TV is still at a very high level, albeit not the level it was at 15-25 years ago during its initial ascent and peak. The rescue of GoT by HoD/Ho7K especially this last season of HoD was borderline miraculous based on where fan/public sentiment was at in 2019. Because these other streamers, mainly Apple and Peacock, have started to compete with HBO in the space we also get this steady supply of shows that are great but won’t be in the GOAT conversation—eg Widow’s Bay, The Beast in Me, Task, Andor, The Pitt, etc.—which are the last bastion of Hollywood actually making content that commands the attention of the culture based on its merit v the algorithmic strategies to maximize the combo of global brand recognition, Xennial/Millennial nostalgia and zoomer virality potential. Music has been broken since Napster, but there are positive signs that the Gen Z and younger cohort are going to be heard from soon via the combo with short form vertical video, and presumably will break the millennials retarded obsession with half a dozen pop acts dominating 80+% of industry revenue. So much of what when wrong in movies was the combo of capeshit and Covid and the rebound in the last two years has been stilted and regularly interrupted by echoes of the same shittaste instincts that made movies so shitty during the 2010s.

Bottomline millennials, like their shithead boomer parents, have terrible taste and view media as a vehicle for their own self-aggrandizement and through which they can channel their own fantasies of fame and power. Now that they are slowly being pushed aside so that Gen Z takes the reins as the creatives in charge as well as the core of the target demo there’s hope that things will improve substantially.

Lol short and vertical video will never replace radio format songs. You're crazy. The concept of the LP was based on the length of a Beethoven symphony. The idea people want to hear approximately 45 minutes of material around a central theme is timeless. It's like four centuries old. Vertical songs will never take off.

Vertical video as a primary means of distributing songs will not take off. Vertical video as a means of distributing fan pov footage from venues and to help songs get broader exposure as sound tracks to viral video is already having a measurable effect. Vertical video that functions essentially like music videos as music marketing is effectively untapped and likely requires a constallation of influencer accounts to act as curators and aggregators for viewers, but when that happens it will be a 10+x more effective means of marketing new music. Spotify’s algorithmic suggestion engines are decade old tech that always sucked and the under 20s are deeply hostile to it and will adopt alternatives that are already natural and native/attuned to the content logic of the platforms where they already spend most of their time.

I would argue it's the exact opposite. I think Gen Z artists are already spamming TikTok and Insta with their garbage. Do you know how cool it would be if a music video on the level of Smells Like Teen Spirit came out now? The content drought isn't because of the packaging or the format or the algorithm. People don't have trouble discovering new music. The problem is that it sucks lol. The music is bad and the artwork is bad and the bands aren't cool and can't play and the songs actually just suck. So whether you tie a gopro on your head and Periscope your show it's not going to replace actual talent and creativity. We don't need advancements in technology. We need advancements in quality. How about just 1 band that doesn't suck. Would be nice, right? People found out about Geese and they can't pen a tune to save their lives. Now imagine the songs were actually good how big it could get.

I think you’re misunderstanding my claim as some kind of theory of technological determinism. 100% agree that these kids will need to come up with something new and cool and actually good. Geese ie the homeless man’s Strokes and 100 dumb algorithmic gimmicks like them are not going to change anything. But this period feels very 1989-90 to me. There’s a dominant platform that’s now almost 10 years old and a core distribution platform that’s fundamentally distrusted and unable to shape tastes of the young. As of now the big difference is that the core unit of product and business model is far less profitable or even established, nor are there multiple currents of underground scenes that are well established and self sustaining such that they can be easily mined if they breakout. But in terms of reading and calling the trends we have this overhang of bloated pop that can’t fill arenas anymore, rap music that’s been completely dead and derivative for nearly a decade (setting aside one off weirdos like Tyler) and rock music that’s a wounded zombie half heartedly recycling indie rock ideas from 20+ years ago. Whatever the next thing might be I strongly suspect it’s not anything you or I will or should be aware of.

You said 1989 and I instantly thought of Pretty Hate Machine. It somehow improves over time.

I think it's really kooky how there are so many music YouTubers and people have access to every piece of studio gear ever invented and not 1 person worldwide can write a good song. It defies logic.

We’ve also endured a generation long period of masturbatory curation, which is how all the people who like to use their brains managed to cope with the era of ~5 gigantic acts dominating all music, along with thousands and thousands of hours of prestige TV and doom scrolling.

The other 89/90 parallel to today is the big bump for country—89-90 was achey breaky heart, Garth Brooks breakout, George Strait, and even more crossover stuff like Black Velvet that prefigured all the 90s female country crossovers into pop. This happens when the execs in LA who hate country are like “uh we got nothing…more of the same thing?” And then you end up watching MTV in 1990 and it’s Skid Row, Warrant, Extreme, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi and GnR on repeat.

Had no idea until reading wiki just now that Reznor was in Cleveland and that Pretty Hate Machine was that far back/how much they did pre Downward Spiral. They are great but I do put them off to the side in a pre-EDM/Industrial side street.

I remember seeing a massive NIN logo draped on the side of the Quicken Loans Arena in promotion of a show there. On the other side was Nike's Witness era branding with LeBron. It fit well aestheically. Made it look like Trent and LeBron were going to gang up together or something. It was the collab America needed.

NIN is sick dude Trent was truly an elite songwriter. I think his legacy is watered down from a long string of late career bad albums and TDS. But he's got some absolute bangers.

He just did a tour where he shut up and played the hits and it was his most successful in a long time. So maybe there is hope.

this is because nobody has or wants sex. all our "content" is online pornography which has replaced sex almost entirely since 2000, and will do so completely since 2050. pre 1950 all art was directly or indirectly aimed at either going to heaven or getting laid. from 1950-2000 no one believed in heaven so it was about getting laid. 2026 we have neither

How many people do I have to fuck in a year to push back on the narrative that porn is destroying sex havers?

BTW all the women I know are fucking. Not sure about the guys, I don't ask. But women tell me all the time they like penis. Who all isn't fucking? I think people are fucking.

I can't put my finger on what is wrong with modern TV. I think people are just too into scrolling that they've lost interest in TV.

But The Pitt is about as good as any medical TV show has ever been.

House of Dragon isn't as good as the best of Game of Thrones, but it is better than like 30% of it. There's twists, there's turns, fights, actors chewing up the scenery, dragons fighting, big battles. The last season was better than the Theon Greyjoy plotlines or watching Dany get stuck in that pyramid or Arya learn kung fu.

I just want to see something I've never seen before. I want a new IP and new characters. The two things I cannot stomach are anything remotely woke or rehashed IP.

My favorite show in the last few years was Fallout. I thought season 1 was brilliant. It was a new IP (for film or television). It had great original characters. It had a small amount of woke but at least no trannies or black vikings or something truly insane.

Then season 2 came out and it was pure shit. The writing was garbage, no main character, rehash of season 1 but convoluted.

It's tough out there. First two seasons of White Lotus were amazing but the third sucked ass. The Witcher season 1 was great and then got terrible. It's amazing how they just can't keep the train rolling.

The problem with modern TV is three problems: 1) the studios paid basically all the costs to build a new distribution model that’s obviously way better, but haven’t really worked out the business model and how to scale revenue, so the current moment is effectively a prolonged austerity process, 2) sports rights have gotten to insane levels because it’s been decoupled from a bunch of low value programming and it’s relatively solid ROI on advertising drives up the price of the broadcast rights while both web ads and search ads are getting wrecked, 3) competition from YouTube and short form video is somewhat overstated and priced in at this point, but the broader shittiness of the economy and depressed nihilism of Gen Z makes their eyeballs much less valuable than they would otherwise be if they were more likely to marry, have children and buy houses that need to be filled with shit they will then buy.
