Biden has appointed a record number of racial and ethnic minorities to lifetime federal judgeships. Of his nearly 240 confirmations, 139 (almost 60%) have been people of color, more than doubling the previous record for a single term. Beyond racial and gender diversity, Biden has also diversified the bench in other ways. He appointed a record 12 openly LGBTQ lifetime judges, including the first three openly LGBTQ women on federal appellate courts. His appointees also include individuals with backgrounds as public defenders or civil rights lawyers, a shift from the typical focus on prosecutors and corporate attorneys. Additionally, he appointed the first four Muslim Americans to serve as federal judges and included judges with disabilities among his appointments.
