that was your first encounter with the 'institution' and institutional reality, the antiseptic smell of the institution, its rituals, the first encounter with anonymous authority, etc. i have vivid 'flashbacks' to the first day of kindergarten at least 3 times a week -- triggered by different things -- a sound, or whiff of strong institutional-grade soap, the harsh clatter of metal on metal, etc. it was a very traumatic initiation.
