Bought a business through a search fund a year ago. It’s in TTTertiary geo and I hate being a CEO.
Cons:
Super fucking stressed out about financials, I have no idea what I’m doing, board isn’t helpful, I could be fired at any time (and I’ll probably get fucked out of any equity), there’s major existential risks that could happen any minute, and I don’t like managing this workforce.
Pros:
There’s strong industry tailwinds, the business is not at risk of AI
I could exit now for 1.5mm post tax. Maybe up to 2mm but that’s really pushing. If I hold, I could net 5mm+ after 3 years of steady growth (like 10-15% per year, in line with historical)—maybe even closer to 10 in 5 years or so.
I currently have net worth of like $750k. Should I take the money and fuck off back to the coast, try and make another deal happen? Or do I ride this wave and try to hit retirement money?

For the money. If I exit and make $1.5mm post tax I’ll have made the equivalent of $1mm/yr in a w2. Feel good about that, and it’ll be a great deal that I can tell investors about for my next thing
