During the making of Deer Hunter, he was together with Meryl Streep. The producers wanted to replace him with another actor when they learned he was sick. Streep told them she'd quit if they fired him.

it's an interesting movie that points to an alternate timeline in which Christopher Walken remained a normal human being playing normal roles as an actor, instead of embracing his bizarre 'quirk chungus character actor,' halting line delivery schtick.
it's like finding an old movie where Bobcat Goldthwaite played a likable character and spoke normally.
